Juventus: Gonzalo Higuain could end up with DC United
Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain could head overseas this summer, and it appears MLS club DC United are seriously interested in the experienced goal-scorer.
This summer, Juventus will aggressively pursue midfield upgrades, using out-of-favor playmaker Miralem Pjanic to help them land a younger, more defensive player. Paul Pogba, Jorginho, and Sandro Tonali are among the top list of targets for Maurizio Sarri, who may also use Adrien Rabiot and Aaron Ramsey as trade pieces.
But Juventus could end up adding striker to their list of pressing needs. Gonzalo Higuain is 32 years old and on an expiring contract, so he could sign with River Plate, another club in South America, or a club in MLS. His mother is very ill and lives in his native Argentina, so River Plate looks like the most logical option.
Higuain may want to spend one more year in Turin, but the suitors appear to be lining up. The Washington Post’s Steven Goff reports that DC United is considering signing Higuain, which would unite him with brother Frederico Higuain.
Last season, Gonzalo Higuain scored five goals with four assists for the Old Lady of Turin, finishing third on the team in goals behind stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala. Only rising star midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur had more assists than Higuain, whose link-up play remains excellent.
While Higuain is slowing down, he remains an effective backup striker and has a well-rounded game. He could be one of a number of veteran forwards to explode in MLS, as Wayne Rooney recently did for DC United.
Goff’s report mentions that it’s extremely early in the process, and nobody quite knows how this deal will develop or what Higuain’s price tag will look like. It’s also hard to say how MLS will be affected by COVID-19.
Transfermarkt says Higuain’s value is at 25 million euros, but Juventus would honestly be lucky to get half of that in a transfer with any team, especially with just one year left on his deal.
