Juventus Transfers: Why Sergiño Dest isn’t a priority

Juventus have shown interest in Ajax right wing back Sergiño Dest, but they can’t sign him this summer.

Now that Andrea Pirlo is the manager of Juventus, the Bianconeri are going to push ahead with a youth movement in Turin. They have already acquired Arthur Melo from Barcelona and are close to adding Weston McKennie from FC Schalke 04.

With McKennie and Arthur in the fold, Juventus would have answered their biggest questions in the midfield. But they still need to add a new striker, a new left back, and maybe one more high-impact player if they can afford it.

Juve have shown interest in Ajax right wing back Sergiño Dest. Earlier this month, La Stampa reported, via JuveFC.com, that the Bianconeri made an offer to Ajax for Dest. Although Dest has been linked to Bayern Munich and other big clubs, he still remains in Amsterdam.

Dest is a fantastic player. He is the perfect modern-day right back and would be an exemplary fit for the Bianconeri. Last season, Dest recorded four assists in the Eredivisie with an average of 1.2 key passes per game in the Champions League, according to WhoScored.com. He’s great at creating chances for others.

It won’t be easy for Juventus to sign Sergiño Dest

The problem is that Dest won’t be easy to acquire. First of all, Forza Juventus relayed news that Dest is uninterested in leaving his current club this summer. And that’s a wise decision for the 19-year-old. He is an effective player but still needs to develop as a teenager, especially when it comes to his defensive work.

Secondly, Dest won’t be cheap. Ajax can hold out until they receive truly big offers from clubs like Barcelona, Bayern, and Juventus. The year 2021 seems like a more realistic window for Dest to make a big move. Dest is currently valued at 18 million euros by Transfermarkt, but Ajax would do well to ask for nearly double that amount.

Juventus would have to heavily invest in Dest, and while he’s a great player who is very young, the club shouldn’t invest highly in the right back position. They already have one of the best wing backs in the game in Juan Cuadrado, whose work on both ends of the pitch is vital. Cuadrado means a lot to the club, and he does not need to be upgraded. Backup right back Danilo will also be impossible to move and isn’t a bad defensive backup for Cuadrado.

The Bianconeri’s issues at fullback are on the left. Alex Sandro is their only left back, and Juve need to find someone who is better at attacking. So if they invest in an attacking fullback, Robin Gosens would make more sense.

Sergiño Dest is a highly talented young player who should be on the Bianconeri’s radar for the future, but this summer, Juve must be prudent with their signings. They need to focus on essential additions, and an attacking right back isn’t necessary right now. Dest should be considered a long-term target.
