Juventus reportedly interested in Mauro Icardi, but why would they be?

Juventus have found a solution at striker in Alvaro Morata, but they are still being linked with a big name at the position.

Hopefully, if all goes well, Juventus will make three permanent additions from their current crop of loanees. Alvaro Morata, Federico Chiesa, and Weston McKennie have all been impressive for the Bianconeri this season. Morata would be the most expensive to sign permanently, but he has also been the most impressive, scoring 10 goals with six assists in all competitions as Cristiano Ronaldo’s partner up top.

Despite Morata’s excellent performances, Juventus may still be monitoring more forwards in the winter and summer 2021 transfer windows. If Juve do make a signing, then they are expected to add a player willing to fulfill a backup role.

However, they are being linked with a big-name No. 9 who has experience as a Serie A superstar in the past.

According to Le10Sport.com, Juventus are still interested in PSG striker Mauro Icardi, who was excellent in his first season with the Ligue 1 giants last season. But due to injury problems and former Juve standout Moise Kean’s own emergence, Icardi has fallen off the map in the 2020-2021 season.

Mauro Icardi wouldn’t make much sense for Juventus

Icardi has scored just twice this season, as he’s only logged 353 minutes in Ligue 1. If things do not improve for Icardi by the end of the season, he could be on the way out of Paris and potentially back in Serie A.

Earlier this year, Juventus were linked to Icardi, but it became clear that he was not going to go to Turin. And worse yet for the Bianconeri, Inter Milan inserted an “anti-Juve clause” for any future deal PSG make to sell Icardi.

Therefore, it would be a shock for Juventus to sign Icardi in the summer 2021 transfer window, even as an alternative if the club cannot buy Morata for whatever reason. Icardi is a great player, but why would PSG and Juve do this deal with that clause seemingly in place? Furthermore, Icardi might get in the way of Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala, whose new contract is the biggest priority for the club in 2021.
