Juventus are currently fifth in Serie A, but the Supercoppa Italiana winners are the winners of nine straight Scudetti. Their title triumph in 2019-2020 occurred amidst, from a neutral perspective, a refreshingly competitive season in the league in which Lazio, Atalanta, and Inter Milan were all legitimate contenders.

The Bianconeri survived the title pushes from those clubs last season, but, this season, they are having to keep up with more teams due to resurgent play from Milan and even Roma.

As a result of Serie A’s increased competitive balance, the overall quality of the league and the interest in the product have risen accordingly. And now, the International Federation of Football for History & Statistics (IFFHS) has ranked Serie A as the best league in the world.

Italy’s Serie A beat out the Premier League, Brazil’s Serie A, La Liga, and Bundesliga, who rounded out the top five in that order.

Serie A is becoming Europe’s most exciting league again

Many football fans like to say that the Premier League is the best overall league in the world, but the quality of play has declined, even as the league still remains competitive at the top. Still, this list only accounts for the year 2020, which saw Liverpool dominate the 2019-2020 campaign en route to them finally clinching the league title.

Meanwhile, Serie A was thoroughly entertaining throughout the year. There were heated Champions League races in 2019-2020, and the 2020-2021 season has been filled with drama already due to Juventus’ slow start under a new manager and Milan’s meteoric rise.

Italian football promises to remain fixating throughout the 2020-2021 campaign. Beyond the clubs already mentioned in this piece, Sassuolo have played very entertaining football in their own right in eighth place. Even the teams lower in the table have been competitive, with relegation candidates like Torino pushing some of the bigger clubs in the league.

Serie A has it all, and while Juventus fans won’t be happy if their team ultimately falls short of making it 10 straight, even Juventini must admit that the increased quality and competitiveness of the league is a very good thing for Italian football. It appears Serie A is experiencing a resurgence.
