In what has been the outcome of some rapidly developing events ahead of the deadline day of the January transfer window, the relegation-threatened Bundesliga side is set to sign one of the established members of Juventus’ current squad.
Sami Khedira was at the peak of his endowments when Juventus incited him to join them for free in the summer of 2015. Having signed a four-year deal with the Bianconeri, he embarked on a new voyage in a league that always boasts about its different philosophy and traditional way of playing football.
Despite landing in Turin in early July, he had to wait until October 4 to make his official Serie A debut. To elaborate the reason for this delayed appearance, one must blame the hamstring injury he sustained in a pre-season friendly match against Marseille which, as confirmed by the Italian side, soon proved to be a muscle tear in his right thigh.
Since then, it has never been an easy ride for him in Serie A, with the German having crossed the landmark of 30 league matches only once back in the 2016-17 season—he played 31 games that season.
Injuries prevented Sami Khedira from being at his best for Juventus
In all, Khedira made 145 appearances for the Old Lady across all competitions, pocketing 21 goals and 13 assists. He could have played many more matches had not his tenure left fragmented by a substantial number of injury woes.
However, during his almost six-year spell at the Italian club, he won five Scudetto, three Coppa Italia, and two Supercoppa Italiana titles. And with the glimmering hope of resurrecting his professional career, Khedira is finding himself on the verge of making a move to his homeland, Germany.
According to the very reliable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin is set to sign Khedira on a permanent deal. It has been reported that the former Stuttgart player would put pen to a 2.5-year contract which is expected to run out in June 2023.
Although Romano didn’t mention any transfer fee related to this move, other claims suggest it is still ‘unclear’ whether a fee would be involved as far as the deal is concerned.
The Bundesliga side currently occupies the 15th spot—just one above the relegation zone—in the league table and levels on the points (17) with 16th-placed Arminia Bielefeld.
Therefore, the Berlin team is seemingly in dire need of someone to rescue their campaign. A leader like Khedira might provide the whole squad with some much-needed respite and encouragement that would eventually lift their courage.
