Juventus are a team looking towards the future. While they are headed to the knockout stages of the 2020-2021 Champions League and eager to be more than just a one-and-done side this time around, the reality is that their squad still isn’t at the necessary level to take full advantage of Cristiano Ronaldo and win the Champions League. Juve, after all, still sit third in Serie A.

In order to win the Champions League title, the Bianconeri must realize that they are a star player in the middle of the park away from being among Europe’s elite again. Juve are still behind the likes of Bayern Munich, PSG, and Manchester City, and their midfield is a liability despite the positive summer 2020 acquisitions of Arthur and Weston McKennie.

There is no greater difference-maker than Paul Pogba in midfield. Manuel Locatelli and Houssem Aouar would be classy additions with more long-term upside than the 27-year-old Pogba. But when it comes to technical class, star power, and proven quality, Pogba tops the list.

He is a World Cup winner and a former Juventus superstar. Pogba was so good in Turin that he helped lead Juve to a Champions League Final and then went on to become the world’s most expensive transfer when he made an ill-fated move to a dysfunctional Manchester United.

Paul Pogba could give Juventus the qualities of two top midfielders in one

Juventus and Pogba were made for each other. Pogba’s best football has come in Turin, and the team itself requires a midfielder with Pogba’s passing range, work ethic in a wide midfield role, and ability to come up with intelligent creative solutions. Most teams need multiple top midfielders to bring the qualities that one Paul Pogba does.

Manchester United will have to reduce their asking price for Pogba, but he will not be an easy player to pry away from the Premier League side. They know Pogba’s value both on the pitch and in terms of marketability. But it is the latter aspect that Juve are, of course, well aware of, and they have shown with Cristiano Ronaldo that they are willing to take the ultimate plunge and gamble on a commercial success.

Above all else, Pogba is like Ronaldo in the sense that he has won a top prize in football and has been a superstar player for years. The commercial success is a direct result of Pogba’s quality and not some fluke born of the modern era. Pogba is legitimately a classy, elite midfield player whose quality is timeless in the way it can be appreciated.

If Juventus want to win the Champions League in the next two seasons before Ronaldo makes an exit, Pogba is the name to circle three times in red ink.
