Sergio Aguero will officially become a free agent at the end of the 2020-2021 season, ending his incredible career with Manchester City in which he established himself as both one of the greatest strikers in Premier League history and one of the greatest players in City’s history. And now, there will be plenty of suitors for him, including potentially Juventus.

The Bianconeri currently have Alvaro Morata as their only out-and-out striker, with Paulo Dybala and Cristiano Ronaldo additionally capable of playing in a forward role in the “front two” seemingly preferred by new manager Andrea Pirlo.

Morata is a well-rounded complement to Ronaldo, and Juve would do well to extend his loan. In the somewhat surprising case they cannot come to an agreement with his parent club, Atletico Madrid, Aguero could emerge as an option.

La Gazzetta dello Sport recently reported, via InsideFutbol.com, that Juventus will go harder after Sergio Aguero and will do what they can to meet Aguero’s apparent asking price of 15 million euros in wages.

Sergio Aguero does not seem to be worth the risk for Juventus

We have seen Juve go after free agents before and pay them significant wages. It usually backfires in terms of the on-field product, as neither Adrien Rabiot nor Aaron Ramsey, for example, have lived up to their wages after being free agent signings in 2019. However, both are expected to be sold this summer, and even though they have not been great, Juve should still net a profit.

At 32 years old and with wages more than double Rabiot and Ramsey, Aguero is a bigger risk. He has less resale value and is far more costly.

Therefore, it makes more sense to see Fabrizio Romano’s report (he is also a more reliable source than the rather hit-or-miss Gazzetta) that Juventus do not see Sergio Aguero as a priority transfer target as of right now. It is interesting to note that he did not dismiss these rumors as “100 percent fake”, whereas he did so explicitly for City’s rivals Manchester United.

Aguero may still be an excellent striker who can score 25 goals in a season. He is, however, costly. And Juventus have big needs they must fill in a cost-effective manner. We have seen how free-agent signings can backfire, and Juventini should be leery about Aguero, in spite of his name recognition. There is a dearth of striker options, with Aguero and Memphis Depay standing out as big free-agent targets. But the wrong gamble could set Juve back.
