Juventus still have plenty to play for in the 2020-2021 season, but Juventini are already thinking about the summer ahead and the future. They understand that the Old Lady is not as strong as she once was, as the Scudetto appears to have slipped away after Juve’s shocking pre-break defeat to Benevento.

There will be much discussion regarding players who must go, but who must stay? Which players can Juventus rely on for the next several years as building blocks? Let’s take a look at four names.

CB Matthijs de Ligt

For me, the first name on the list has to be Matthijs de Ligt. Juve’s big-money transfer in 2019, de Ligt has proven to be worth every cent after successfully making the jump from Ajax to the biggest club in Serie A.

De Ligt is a natural leader who has all the traits necessary to succeed Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci as the Bianconeri’s next captain. His quick command of the Italian language and willingness to give instructions to teammates are signs of his desire to take on a leadership role. He wants to be a great player for Juventus and understands the gravity of being a center back for this prestigious club.

There is no doubt that de Ligt must be central to Juve’s future plans. He is one of the best defensive players in Italian football, with some arguing he is the best. If not now, he almost certainly will reign as No. 1 among the central defenders.
