Giovanni Trapattoni, Antonio Conte and Massimiliano Allegri were viable candidates, but it’s Marcello Lippi who gets the nod as the boss in this greatest XI.

A tactical behemoth whose ability to squeeze every ounce of talent out of functional, ‘do a job’ players facilitated a period of Juve domination in the latter half of the 1990s, Lippi is remembered as one of the finest coaches in history.

The Italian was a tinkerman at heart, a coach always willing to adapt and flex his versatility in a bid to shut out his opponents. He embraced rotation, resented prima donnas, but ensured Juve’s superstars would forever thrive under his studious eye. It would be a revolving door of talent in Turin, but Lippi’s nous ensured the Bianconeri persistently prospered.

Lippi proved pivotal in Juventus reaching three consecutive Champions League finals between 1996 and 1998 – only winning the first – and Italy claiming World Cup glory under his tutelage in 2006. He’d also claim five Scudetti either side of a brief spell at domestic rivals Inter Milan, a venture which hasn’t dealt his reputation a big enough blow in our eyes.
