Juventus defender Danilo has been one of the standout players of an otherwise sub-standard season for the Old Lady, as he’s arguably playing the best football of his entire career under Andrea Pirlo. The man has stepped up as a leader, playing multiple positions for his team.
He’s also making some great points in the media in the aftermath of the collapsed European Super League, of which Juventus president Andrea Agnelli was a prominent part of.
Some in the media have portrayed UEFA as “good guys”, rather than taking a nuanced approach. Stopping the Super League was indeed a good thing, but UEFA did not do this to “save football”, but rather to keep ahold of their monopoly.
Danilo spoke specifically from the perspective of the players. A European Super League would have been harmful, since it would have added more games to the calendar – of which there are already arguably too many.
Danilo reminds us why UEFA don’t care about player safety either
The Brazilian defender brought up a great point, though. As we have seen this season, it’s not like UEFA and FIFA care any bit about player safety either.
He told Sky Sport, via Mirko Nicolino on Twitter, that if UEFA were actually so worried about player safety, they wouldn’t have forced players to play so much and travel during the pandemic.
This in reference to all the meaningless international games, including the asinine UEFA Nations League, that have taken place for no other purpose than revenue and the egoes of UEFA/FIFA. These matches have led to more overload injuries and to COVID-19 spread among players, clubs, and national teams.
Danilo’s points are well-taken and a reminder to many fans that they need to be careful and not take anything said by UEFA – or their seemingly endless list of PR stooges in the (mostly English) media – at face value. They have never cared about the player and are just as greedy as the billionaires who now want to rule the game with the same self-centered intentions as UEFA and FIFA’s current monopoly.
In this war of greed and money, there are no winners among fans or players. They would like to use us pawns in their power struggle. And we cannot allow it.
