Losing to Chelsea in the final of the UEFA Champions League ramped up the belief that the prevailing Manchester City squad was not good enough. They lacked the precision in finishing and also were struggling for not having a physically fit Sergio Aguero under their ranks.

Having spent £100 million to sign Jack Grealish from Aston Villa this summer, Manchester City have already strengthened their attacking department to some extent. Yet, Pep Guardiola’s desire to bring in an out-and-out striker remains widespread. Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is a possibility, but he would only be allowed to leave if Daniel Levy was to be offered a ridiculous amount of money this summer.

Manchester City are pushing for the move and have reportedly prepared a final bid for around £150 million. Should that be rebuffed as well, City could prioritise signing a short-gap solution. Who do they have in mind? Reports believe that their list of alternatives includes the name of Cristiano Ronaldo, who is a former Manchester United legend.

At 36, Ronaldo is more than capable of adapting to the fierce pace of the Premier League. If anything, he would be more of a box-oriented forward, striving to get at the end of the balls put inside the box by flamboyant City creators. What Juventus have reportedly been looking for is a transfer fee of around £25 million — a far more reasonable price than what they could end up paying for Kane. From that perspective, singing Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the biggest names in world football, seems rational.

It would be interesting to see how the Harry Kane saga pans out because City’s stance on Ronaldo’s transfer hinges on what happens to Kane’s future at Spurs.
