Why Juventus are willing to let Weston McKennie leave this summer
Juventus have cited Weston McKennie’s off the field behaviour as the main reason why they’re willing to offload the American this summer, according to reports.
McKennie made an instant impression in Turin following his loan move from Schalke last summer, with Juventus buying the midfielder out permanently before the end of the campaign. However, after a scintillating start, his influence waned significantly during the second half of the season.
In April, he, along with Paulo Dybala and Arthur Melo were suspended by the club for breaking COVID-19 regulations.
And it’s McKennie’s continued off the field issues that have seen him become transferable this summer.
Too many snacks?
Gianluca Di Marzio reported last week that Juventus were willing to offload the exuberant Texan if the right offer came in. However, it wasn’t clear exactly why Juve would be content with seeing the back of McKennie before the end of the transfer window.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport (via JuveFC), the club aren’t happy with McKennie’s behaviour. The Bianconeri feel he isn’t following the standards set by the club, with his diet supposedly a major issue. Apparently, the American’s a serial snacker – in the eyes of Juventus, at least.
Thus, the club are open to offers for the midfielder before the window closes. It’s believed that Juve are looking for a fee in the region of €30m.
Is anyone interested?
Di Marzio’s revelation sparked a tirade of rumours regarding McKennie’s future, with plenty of clubs across Europe reportedly expressing an interest.
Various reports suggested that Fabio Paratici and Tottenham were keen on negotiating a swap deal with the Bianconeri that’d see Moussa Sissoko move to Turin in exchange for McKennie, but Fabrizio Romano was quick to shut down these rumours.
Romano reiterated that Juve will only sell if they receive an “important offer” that exceeds €25m.
Nicolo Schira understands that Everton are interested in the American, while Sport Mediaset has linked Aston Villa with a move.
However, nothing is advanced at this stage. Nevertheless, Juve’s intention to sell McKennie will mean this will be an interesting sub-plot to keep an eye out for in the final week of the summer transfer window.
