After scoring 13 and assisting 12 in less than 40 games for Jong PSV, and across the U17s through to the U21s, Ihattaren was given his shot in the first team just ten months after signing his first pro deal. The midfielder made 12 senior appearances during the backend of the 2018/19 season, debuting as a 17-year-old.

However, the youngster had failed to make a serious impact. Nevertheless, he kicked on considerably the following campaign after saying in the summer: “This is going to be my year. Write that down.”

In what was a disjointed PSV side under the tutelage of Mark van Bommel, Ihattaren notched 18 goal contributions (nine goals, nine assists) in 34 appearances before the season was voided as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nevertheless, Ihattaren, described by Ruud van Nistelrooy as a talent “who blew everybody away” following his initial introduction into the senior set-up as a 16-year-old, was starting to garner interest from overseas. Chelsea and Manchester City were both linked with a move, but PSV were proactive and tied the promising teenager down to an extension.

The sky seemed the limit for the Ronaldinho-inspired playmaker. So, what happened?
