Juventus: 3 mistakes Bianconeri made in the summer transfer window
2. The summer transfer window weakened the defence…
The summer transfer window is usually seen as an opportunity to repair what is there to be repaired. Teams and clubs utilise the window to improve the squad depth if their first team is deemed to have adequate firepower to attain their coveted aspirations from the season. But things do work differently at Juventus. Here young players get sacrificed to make way for the veterans.
One year ago, there were dark clouds hovering over Giorgio Chiellini’s future at Juventus. Several concrete reports suggested that he was about to retire from professional football. If not so, he was understandably on the brink of parting ways with the Bianconeri. Yet, the drastic shift in the story took place this summer when Juventus confirmed the 37-year-old’s one-year contract extension with the Turin-based club.
They brought back Daniele Rugani, and Allegri was set to appease his quest for game time at Juve. So, it was certain from the very start that Rugani won’t leave the club permanently or for another loan spell this summer. A mistake-prone defender, Rugani was always going to be bad news for the club’s defensive ambition, as he was witnessed making some mishaps already in the pre-season friendly matches.
The next shockwave hit the ground in the form of Merih Demiral’s departure. Touted to be the future of Juventus’ core, Demiral got sold, albeit on loan with an option to buy next summer, to Atalanta. They did the same thing with Cristian Romero last summer.
Rehashing the procedure, they did it again with Demiral this time. Romero went on to become the best defender for Serie A 2020/21. We would be disappointed but not surprised if Demiral were to accomplish something of a similar ilk while playing for La Dea this season. With Radu Dragusin also joining UC Sampdoria on loan, Allegri now possesses only four senior defenders at his disposal. Have you smelt the stench here? Unfortunately, we have.
