6 potential free agents Juventus could target next summer
Sure, Juventus fans are barely over what many regarded as an anti-climatic summer transfer window. But that doesn’t mean we can’t be thinking about summer ’22 already, right?
During Juve’s dominant spell over Calcio in the 2010s, the club had a habit of signing free agents at a canter. Such a policy brought about tremendous success at the start of the decade as the Bianconeri brought in the likes of Fabio Cannavaro, Andrea Pirlo, Paul Pogba, Fernando Llorente and Sami Khedira for absolutely nothing whatsoever.
However, more recent priceless (literally) acquisitions have evolved into, well, undesirable pieces of business. Emre Can failed, while Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot are yet to justify their handsome salaries in Turin.
Recently, we’ve seen the Piedmontese behemoths alter their transfer policy drastically. Since 2019, prodigies such as Matthijs de Ligt and Federico Chiesa have been signed and this summer, all of Juve’s additions were under 23 years old. Finally, amid a period of transition, the club have grasped this seemingly abstract ‘long-term future’ concept.
But, next summer is unique in that an array of talent could be available to scoop up on a free transfer. The list is endless and currently includes Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe, AC Milan’s Franck Kessie and Manchester United’s Paul Pogba.
However, we’re going to be realistic. Juventus are not going to be signing Mbappe and it’s incredibly unlikely for the club to pursue a reunion with Pogba considering his monster salary. So, after scouring the potential free agents’ list, here are six players the Bianconeri could target in positions of need.
Andre Onana (Ajax)
Wojciech Szczesny is on thin ice following a sub-par 2020/21 and his horror show to start the new season in Udine. Mattia Perin is a fine number two, but Juventus might want to test the waters in the goalkeeping market next summer regardless.
Andre Onana would be the perfect option.
It appeared inevitable that the maverick shot-stopper would depart Ajax in the summer with Arsenal sniffing around, but the 25-year-old’s harsh ‘doping’ ban turned off potential suitors. Thus, he remains in Amsterdam with just a year left on his current deal.
Inter Milan have been linked with a move next summer, and Juve would be wise to join the race, especially if Szczesny’s indifference perpetuates. The Bianconeri would not only be getting a fine shot-stopper who played a key hand, literally, in Ajax’s recent magical European adventure, but a keeper so adept with his feet that their build-up play would be transformed.
He’s the goalkeeper Andrea Pirlo so desperately needed.
