Did you forget him? On the back of a breakthrough season for Brescia, the majority turned their eyes off him, thinking that he would be one of those one-season wonders. His rise to prominence and stardom respectively felt nothing but futile. He was considered one of the next big things in Italian football one year ago — and one year back, he was gone, just fading away from the limelight. Well, to remind everyone of his existence, he is back with a rejuvenated mojo.

Owing to various injury issues, the loss of form was imminent for Sandro Tonali last season. As per Transfermarkt, he played 1,335 minutes of football but was heavily inconsistent with his performances while performing as a deep-lying midfielder. The inconsistency resulted in Stefano Pioli taking the safe passage and not using him that much in crucial games.

But since the start of the 2021/22 season, it seems as if the last season was just a mere fluke. Being convinced of the midfielders traits, Milan decided to sign Tonali on a permanent deal in the summer transfer market, offering him to pen a five-year deal with the Rossoneri. It looks as if the belief in Tonali’s restoration from the Milan management and hierarchy is starting to pay off.

Since the beginning of the new campaign, the 21-year-old midfielder has been in excellent form, scoring from a direct free-kick in Milan’s  4-1 win over Cagliari Calcio last month. His long-range passing has matched the samples from his days at Brescia. He now manoeuvres the play well and dictates the flow. If Manuel Locatelli and Sandro Tonali go head to head, it would be interesting to see who comes out at the top.
