3. Coming of age display vs Porto

Juventus were in trouble. With Cristiano Ronaldo’s clutch gene escaping him amid a 3-1 deficit to an inferior Porto side, the Bianconeri required an alternate hero.

Enter Chiesa.

In 14 second-half minutes, the Italian turned the second leg on its head. Chiesa restored parity on the night with an emphatic first-time finish and had the chance to score a quick second but was denied by a combination of Pepe and the post. He wouldn’t have to wait long for his brace to arrive, though, as he headed home from a sumptuous Juan Cuadrado cross.

Chiesa had grabbed the European tie by the scruff of its neck and almost single-handedly forced the contest into extra-time. Unfortunately, Sergio Oliveira’s daisy-cutter of a free-kick rendered Chiesa’s earlier heroics insignificant as Juventus bowed out of the Champions League.

Nevertheless, we can now look back on that night as the beginning of Chiesa’s path to superstardom.
