Douglas Costa will not continue with Brazilian club Gremio next season but he has no future at Juventus either.

After spending three seasons in Turin, Costa joined Gremio, where he began his career, on loan until 30 June 2022 last May. However, his return wasn’t a fruitful one as Gremio succumbed to relegation from Série A.

The electrifying winger lit up the Allianz Stadium at times during his stint at Juventus, but persistent injury woes limited his ceiling. Thus, he was deemed surplus to Maurizio Sarri’s requirements in the summer of 2019, spending the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Bayern Munich, before Andrea Pirlo opted against integrating the Brazilian into his squad a season later.

Costa made 31 goal contributions in just over 100 Juventus appearances before joining Gremio, where he picked up more yellow cards (seven) than goal contributions (five) in 26 Série A appearances.

Despite Gremio’s relegation, Costa was expected to remain at the club until June. However, Romeo Agresti reports that will no longer be the case with Gremio facing a significant cut to its finances.

Agresti wrote on Friday night that Costa and Gremio were preparing their “divorce”. And while the player has no future at Juventus, he’s expected to receive offers from other Brazilian clubs as well as MLS.

According to ESPN, a possible option for the 31-year-old Brazilian is LA Galaxy. Negotiations are believed to be “moving along” but a deal is yet to be struck.

Nicolo Schira reported in December that several Saudi Arabian and Qatari clubs were also interested in signing Costa.
