Juventus 2-0 Hellas Verona: 3 takeaways as new boys enjoy dream debuts
Far from perfect
Igor Tudor will be lamenting how Zakaria was granted the freedom of Piedmont to score his debut goal at such a critical time in the match. Juve’s second came against the run of play as Hellas Verona started the second-half as they did the first.
Their heavy man-orientation caused Juventus problems at the start of both halves, and they were able to sustain pressure after the restart with the hosts struggling to get out. However, they desperately lacked a spark in the final thrid in the absence of Giovanni Simeone and Gianluca Caprari. An off day for Antonin Barak inhibited their cause and it was left wing-back Darko Lazovic who proved the biggest threat to Juve’s defensive security.
Despite their pressure, the visitors only mustered a measly 0.6 xG. Wojciech Szczesny was rarely tested.
Nevertheless, Allegri will be fully aware that superior opposition, or even a Verona with Simeone and Caprari, would’ve made Juventus pay for their poor managing of the contest in the second period.
In summation, the Bianconeri produced a fun but flawed display on Sunday night. The win and debut performances will gloss over the teething issues that undoubtedly still remain.
Juve have some way to go before they reach their desired level, but it does feel like something special might be brewing once again in Turin.
