Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri confirmed on Sunday that midfielder Weston McKennie will miss the rest of the season with a broken foot.

McKennie suffered a double foot fracture in Juve’s draw with Villarreal last month following a strong but fair challenge from Pervis Estupinan. The American was unable to put any weight on his injured left foot and x-rays soon revealed the very worst.

However, it was initially believed that McKennie could return before the end of the season, but Allegri has since said that the midfielder will make his comeback next season.

After watching his side squeak out yet another unconvincing victory on Sunday evening against Spezia, Allegri spoke to the media about McKennie’s injury.

“The season is over for Weston because of his injury. He’ll be back next season,” the Juventus manager said (via Fabrizio Romano).

While Juventini weren’t expecting to see much of McKennie for the remainder of the 2021/22 season, confirmation that he won’t play at all was a little bit of a surprise. Juventus still have ten games left Serie A, and are fighting on both the continental and Coppa Italia fronts.

The former Schalke midfielder’s injury leaves Juve with limited options in the middle of the park, but they will soon be bolstered by the return of Denis Zakaria. The Swiss international was initially expected to miss much of March with a thigh injury, but Allegri is hopeful that he’ll be able to call upon Zakaria for the all-important second leg against Villarreal next Wednesday.

The USMNT will also have to do without one of their key stars as they seek to confirm their spot at this year’s World Cup. They still have some work to do to secure automatic qualification with their final three fixtures arriving at the end of the month against Mexico, Panama and Costa Rica.
