Unfortunately, there was less success for the South American contingent during the recent break.

Juan Cuadrado started Colombia’s 3-0 win over Bolivia but he picked up a yellow card that ruled him out of the following contest against Venezuela. A James Rodriguez penalty ensured they picked up back-to-back wins in March but it still wasn’t enough to see them sneak into an intercontinental playoff spot.

Cuadrado’s Colombia ended their qualifying campaign sixth in the table with 23 points, a point adrift of Peru in the all-important playoff spot.

Brazilians Danilo and Arthur Melo enjoyed quiet breaks away. Veteran Danilo was rested for Brazil’s 4-0 thumping of Bolivia after playing 90 minutes in the beatdown of Chile. Arthur, meanwhile, came on as a second-half substitute in the Bolivia win. He’s quite a way down Tite’s midfield pecking order.
