The Derby d’Italia returns for yet another significant iteration on Sunday night as Simone Inzaghi’s faltering Inter Milan travel to Turin.

Massimiliano Allegri’s Juventus head into the derby having extended their unbeaten run in Serie A to 16 games before the break with a 2-0 win over Salernitana. The Bianconeri’s impressive domestic run has heaped the pressure on the top three. So much so that Juve will usurp Inter in the table with a win on Sunday.

Inter, who broke Bianconeri hearts in February’s Supercoppa as Alexis Sanchez struck at the death, endured a dire March. They exited the Champions League at the hands of Liverpool, and they’ve won just one of their last seven Serie A games.

Several Nerazzurri stars are woefully out of touch, most notably Lautaro Martinez and Nicolo Barella, and manager Inzaghi will be hoping that the recent break was a timely one for his side. They’re in desperate need of a resurgence, and what better way to reignite their Scudetto charge than by claiming victory on the road in the Derby d’Italia against the country’s most winningest outfit.

Victory for the hosts, however, will compromise the Nerazzurri’s title charge further while thrusting the Old Lady into serious contention.

Juventus Team News

Dusan Vlahovic returned to Continassa during the international break after picking up a minor injury, but the Serb’s status for Sunday’s derby isn’t in doubt. Paulo Dybala is also in contention to start.

Denis Zakaria and Alex Sandro have also returned from their respective injuries over the break, although the latter’s status in the matchday squad isn’t guaranteed.

Leonardo Bonucci’s status is unknown, with Matthijs de Ligt set to be partnered by either Giorgio Chiellini or Daniele Rugani in defence.

Federico Chiesa, Weston McKennie and Kaio Jorge are all long-term absentees.

Inter Milan Team News

Crucially, Marcelo Brozovic is expected to make the trip to Turin having missed Inter’s last two outings with a calf injury. The Croatian is poised to make his full return to training ahead of the weekend.

Stefan De Vrij, however, will miss Sunday’s game having suffered a more serious calf injury than Brozovic. That means either Danilo D’Ambrosio or Andrea Ranocchia will join Milan Skriniar and Alessandro Bastoni in Inzaghi’s three-man defence.

Otherwise, the Nerazzurri are fully fit. Denzel Dumfries and Ivan Perisic will continue at wing-back, while Edin Dzeko, Lautaro Martinez and Alexis Sanchez are vying for two spots up front.

The projected return of Marcelo Brozovic is huge for the away side. His absence in Inter’s last two outings exacerbated their demise as they struggled to exert control in either contest. The Croatian’s likely presence means that Max Allegri will have to gameplan for him and attempt to take him out of the contest (no, not literally).

I expect the Juve boss to adopt his default approach in this one. The hosts will press sporadically, cede territory, attempt to contain the visitors and look to hit them on the counter through Juan Cuadrado, Paulo Dybala and Dusan Vlahovic.

It’s a pretty wise ploy considering Inter’s recent struggles in front of goal, and this conservative plan has had success against the Nerazzurri in the past.

But, I’ve just got a feeling that Sunday might be the game where it clicks for Inter. The recent break was much-needed and I think this side are too talented and well-drilled to slide below Juve in the Serie A table. Thus, I’m backing the away side to snap Juve’s unbeaten run in the derby and breathe fresh life into their title challenge.

Prediction: Juventus 1-2 Inter Milan
