Juventus have made a concerted effort in recent years to get younger. Since the start of the 2019/20 summer window, the average age of arrival has been 23.4, while the average age of departure has been 24.9.

Four key components of the club’s rebuild, meanwhile, in Matthijs de Ligt (19), Federico Chiesa (22), Manuel Locatelli (23) and Dusan Vlahovic (22) were all 23 years old or younger when they signed for the club.

Thus, the addition of Di Maria would contrast the club’s recent policy. At 34, Di Maria has little-to-no sell-on value and he’s the sort of signing that Juventus would’ve made amid their subjugation of calcio in the 2010s.

Overall, this is a move that reeks of short-termism.
