Former Juventus defender to auction Ronaldo jersey for Syria-Turkey earthquake victims
Former Juventus defender Merih Demiral has decided to auction a Cristiano Ronaldo jersey for the victims of the recent Syria-Turkey earthquake.
The Turkish defender announced this week through his official Twitter account that he will be auctioning a Cristiano Ronaldo jersey from his collection to raise awareness and funds to aid the rehabilitation of those who were affected by the natural calamity in Syria and Turkey.
The current Atalanta defender and Cristiano Ronaldo’s former teammate spoke recently about the situation in Syria and Turkey. After discussing, he decided that the signed Ronaldo kit would be used to help the unfortunate souls in the region.
Demiral said this in his announcement:
"“I just spoke with @Cristiano. He said that he was very sad about what happened in Turkey. We are auctioning Ronaldo’s signed jersey in my collection. All proceeds from the auction will be used in the earthquake zone. The funds will be donated to @ahbap,”"
The funds will be donated to a local NGO in the region. They will then carry out the humanitarian operations, as required.
The current situation
On Monday, a powerful earthquake struck southeastern Turkey and neighboring Syria in the early morning. This disaster devastated cities while killing and injuring thousands.
It has been reported that around 9500 people lost their lives and thousands have been injured in this heartbreaking calamity.
Though rescue operations are underway, authorities have struggled to work due to deplorable climate conditions, which are frequent in the affected areas.
Demiral’s act is a heartwarming one. It will not only help the impoverished state of the people there but also will raise awareness and a call for unity to help the people of Syria and Turkey.
