Bright lights of capital city beckon for Juventus midfielder

Juventus desperately need to improve on last term and their recent FIFA Club World Cup campaign, otherwise Igor Tudor will be under the cosh.

Tudor, since being installed as permanent manager ahead of the Club World Cup in the United States, has clearly set his sights on a massive squad revamp.

Yet Juventus are cash-strapped, with general manager Damien Comolli only budgeting €50 million (US$58.4m) on summer transfers unless players are sold to finance new faces.

The relentless rumors in the Italian media about top-notch players arriving at the Turin titans seems far-fetched when taking into account their financial constraints.

There seems to be a mass exodus of unwanted players lined up to ply their trade elsewhere, with big bucks to be earned from moving on midfielder Douglas Luiz, winger Nicolas Gonzalez and striker Dusan Vlahovic.

Both Argentinian Gonzalez and Serbia star Vlahovic have previously turned down approaches from the highly-lucrative Saudi Pro League, and prefer to tackle one of the top five leagues in Europe in order to be called up for international duty.

World Cup beckons for wantaways

The two Juventus outcasts need to find suitable clubs where they can get regular playing time to be in with a shot of competing at next year’s FIFA World Cup.

Luiz has a plethora of admirers in the Premier League, having excelled during his stint at Aston Villa that prompted the Bianconeri to splash the cash last summer.

There’s been endless speculation about a part swap deal to a plethora of English top flight clubs, including either Marcus Rashford or Jadon Sancho from Manchester United.

Even though Luiz’s potential departure would trim their wage bill, his salary last term was €4.4 million (US$5.1m), the club have identified a few pricey replacements with arguably the pick of the bunch being Wolverhampton Wanderers’ defensive midfielder André. The Brazil international has a price tag of around €30m (US$35m).

The 22-year-old would be an upgrade on Luiz, who experienced a disappointing debut season in Serie A, and would add some much-needed bite to the lacklustre midfield.

London calling for midfielder

Both Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United appear to be in pole position to secure Luiz’s signature, which would then free up the finances to enter the summer transfer market.

Europa League winner Yves Bissouma is a much cheaper option than André and others in midfield. Although he has not been at his best over the past 12 months. He has only scored twice in 79 appearances since joining Spurs from Brighton & Hove Albion.

Bissouma would cost half as much as acquiring Malian international André, but do Juve really need to keep dipping into the bargain basement?

Since Max Allegri was axed, Juve are quite happy to snap up players that haven’t cut the mustard. Although that partly accounts for why the Bianconeri were way off the mark of being Scudetto challengers last term.

Bissouma joins Juve radar

Bissouma has been strongly linked with both Everton and Juventus, as well as offered to AS Roma and Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce. The 28-year-old is also on the radar of clubs in Germany and Spain.

Thomas Frank moved across London from Brentford to take over the Tottenham hot-seat, and it has been widely reported in the English and Italian press that he would like to sell Bissouma to help finance bringing in Luiz.

Comolli was responsible for deals to land Dmitar Berbatov and Luka Modric to Tottenham during his three-year stint at the club, so his contacts could ease offloading Luiz and replacing him with Bissouma.

Luiz link with West Ham

Yet Graham Potter, the West Ham manager, is ready to scupper Spurs by offering Luiz the opportunity to get his career back on track.

The Hammers were woeful last term, with Potter under pressure to improve results or face the boot. Bringing in a player of the quality of Luiz, who enjoyed a highly successful five-year spell at Villa, could prove to be his savior.

West Ham are trying to get ahead of Tottenham for a deal, but unlike their London rivals are expected to table a season-long loan with a conditional obligation to buy Luiz.

Lack of urgency at Juventus

Juve appear to be after quick money because they need to start bringing in top quality players before the Serie A season kicks off in late August.

Juventus certainly require a reliable defensive midfielder to help shield Tudor’s favored back three, and help them win the ball back to release to the attackers.

There are so many positions for Tudor to tweak, which can be achieved by dispatching underperformers and wantaways to generate income to buy.

Yet it is imperative to bring upgrades to Turin, rather than rejected players. Otherwise Juventus can expect another season in the doldrums, and continue to look as drab as they did at the Club World Cup against both Manchester City and Real Madrid.
