Yet the central midfielder, who has won seven caps for Italy, will only join this month if the French trailblazers can offload Canada midfielder Ismael Kone.

Juve are demanding a permanent exit for the 23-year-old, while OM only want to bring in Fagioil on loan. However, an offer could be tabled by OM head coach Roberto De Zerbi in the next few days.

Fagioil has a checkered past. He was handed a seven-month suspension in October 2023 following his involvement in illegal football betting, both in Italy and overseas.

Despite his ban, Fagioil extended his contract until 2028. He has been an outcast since Thiago Motta took over the reins as head coach, having played just 31 minutes since mid-December and warmed the bench during the Napoli defeat.

With previous experience in the French top flight, having played for Paris Saint-Germain, De Zerbi will be keen to get a deal over the line for the midfielder.

Yet OM will firstly need to send out Kone, who is rumoured to be wanted by Rennes. However, Rennes would prefer a straight swap. That would probably involve left winger Amine Gouiri, and potentially scupper an agreement for Fagioil.

De Zerbi has so far only signed ex-Lazio center-back Luiz Felipe this month, luring him from Al-Ittihad on a freebie. This was quite a coup as the Saudi Pro League side had forked out €22million (US$23.1m) on a four-year deal from Spanish outfit Betis in September 2023.

Ligue 1 highfliers OM are understandably keen to strengthen their squad, as they trail table topping Paris Saint-Germain. Both Fagioli and AS Roma’s versatile defender Nicola Zalewski are on their radar.

Juventus are likely to stand their ground about a loan for Fagioil, with only a straight purchase in the region of €15m (US$15.8m) or a loan with an obligation to buy seeming viable for the Bianconeri.
