Diego Coppola’s monumental display in the heart of Hella Verona’s defence against Juve helped to make an impact on Bianconeri head coach Thiago Motta.

The 21-year-old is a summer transfer target after he superbly marshalled the five-player defense, and kept out the hungry hosts until the 72nd minute, in front of Motta.

Khephren Thuram broke the deadlock, with substitute Teun Koopmeiners on target with a last-gasp goal in Sunday’s Serie A tussle.

Although the pressure was alleviated on Motta by making it five league wins on the bounce, the Juventus Ultras are still fuming that their beloved club has crashed out of the Champions League and Coppa Italia.

It was probably just as well that Juventus swerved a last 16 Champions League clash with Arsenal, as the Londoners demolished PSV Eindhoven 7-1 in the first leg, Had Juve negotiated their way past the Dutch champions they could have been in the firing line of the Premier League giants last night, which could have been disastrous.

Center-back Coppola is valued by his club at €12 million (US$12.83m), which seems like a snip for a 21-year-old full of promise. He extended his contract with the club by signing a new five-year deal that expires in 2027.

Motta is attracted to the fact that Coppola is equally at home in a back three, four or five and boosts tactical intelligence far beyond his young age.

Having started 18 Serie A games last term, the former Verona youth academy starlet has begun 23 out of 27 league matches this season.

He made his Verona debut as a Coppa Italia substitute in December 2021, and the following month got to play his maiden Serie A match.

His impressive displays ever since have caught the eye of the national team, where he has been a pivotal part of the U21 set-up. Coppola is masterful at intercepting the danger and regaining possession, with his only flaw being his rawness that has resulted in numerous yellow cards being brandished.

Motta’s no nonsense tactical prowess should iron out Coppola's propensity for committing needless fouls, and could be developed into a complete center-back that should win international honours in the near future.
