Santiago Castro joined Bologna from Argentina outfit Velez Sarsfield for €13.2 million (US$15.3m) in January 2024, and with his clinical finishing and technique skills is attracting plenty of admirers.

He has netted 10 times in 49 matches for the Serie A side, and became Bologna’s youngest ever player to score 10 Serie A goals.

His ability to play down both flanks and impressive set of skills have recently attracted attention of Chelsea and Juventus, who both require a striker to consistently find the back of the net.

Castro’s instant impact at Bologna resulted in offers being tabled by Inter Milan and former Juventus managerial target Simone Inzaghi, who is now the head coach of Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.

Juventus, whose summer striker signings Jonathan David and Lois Openda have yet to adapt to the defensive tactics employed in Serie A. The club are expected to lose their top scorer Dusan Vlahovic as a free agent at the end of the season, which at least saves them from paying out his loyalty bonus.

With sudden interest in the 25-year-old Serbia star, Juve could opt to cash in on Vlahovic during the winter transfer window. As Serie A’s top earner the Bianconeri would at least trim their wage bill should Vlahovic be sold in January.

Bologna slap high price on Castro

Bologna value Castro, whose contract expires in June 2028, at €50m (US$58.1m). Although head coach Vincenzo Italiano would understandably be reluctant to sell their rising star to a rival Serie A club, having played a pivotal role in their shock Coppa Italia success last season.

Castro has suffered from a foot injury, sustained in training, this term that has restricted him to only three Serie A starts. Yet he has scored once and provided one goal assist in Bologna’s five top-flight games.

Chelsea have sent scouts to rule their eye on the 21-year-old, yet to be called up by Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni, as a possible winter signing.

Castro is currently being taught English by Bologna summer signing Jonathan Rowe, which paves the way for a potential move to the Premier League with Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Newcastle United among his admirers.

Former Juventus boss Antonio Conte, who led Napoli to their fourth Scudetto last term, also has Castro in his sights as his style of play is frequently compared to Argentina and Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez.
