The 27-year-old, hand-picked by head coach Thiago Motta to take over between the sticks, has frequently been a saviour for the Turin titans.

As he would relish the opportunity to compete in the Champions League again next term, should Juventus fail to secure their berth next season then he may well ply his trade elsewhere.

Even though the Milan-born ‘keeper conceded four during the recent Atalanta debacle, Juve’s worst Serie A home defeat since 1967, Di Gregorio was in sparkling form and prevented what could have read more like a cricket score.

Since keeping a clean sheet in December’s Champions League success over visiting Manchester City in December, Di Gregorio has been monitored by the Premier League champions.

The City future of Brazil ‘keeper Ederson is uncertain as a contract extension has yet to be discussed. He will enter the final year of his deal in June, so City may wish to cash in on the 31-year-old rather than let him leave on a free at the end of the 2025/26 season.

Should Ederson be moved on during the summer transfer window, then Di Gregorio is a major candidate to take over the gloves although Juve would be loathed to lose him. FC Porto's Diogo Costa is also on the club's wishlist.

Turned down England

Di Gregorio previously snubbed a move to the Premier League, picking Juventus over Liverpool last summer, and has taken over the duties of Wojciech Szczesny with aplomb.

He signed his five-year contract with the Bianconeri, which will cost the club an overall fee of €18 million (US$19.65m) in an initial loan deal from Monza with an obligation to buy.

This €13.5m (US$14.75m) obligation to buy clause has yet to be activated, so the former Inter Milan youth academy star is yet to become a fully-fledged Juventus player.

Di Gregorio was named top Serie A goalkeeper for the 2023/24 season, and is among the candidates to swoop this campaign’s accolade.
