What’s at stake
Recently appointed Juve manager Luciano Spalletti hit his first bump in the road after his side were held at home 1-1 by Sporting Lisbon in their midweek Champion League clash. The 66-year-old will be aiming to bounce back to secure a first win in front of home fans.
The Bianconeri squad remain in flux as Spalletti continues to try and figure out his ideal starting line-up. He rotated players following the tense victory at Cremonese. Filip Kostic, who has performed well since starting for interim manager Massimo Brambilla in the home win against Udinese, was unexpectedly dropped from the wing-back position. The Serbian could be called up with Andrea Cambiaso switched to the right-hand side, where he is more lethal.
Victory could see the Turin titans back in contention for the Serie A title, with the Bianconeri just three points away from the second place deadlock between As Roma and Inter Milan. With the league table so tight, defeat could see Juventus sink further away from the top four positions, with Como, Lazio and Udinese among the highfliers.
With the international break looming, Spalletti will be chasing maximum points to keep the mood high as he looks to make tactical adjustments during the two-week spell away from Serie A.
After a turbulent start to their season, which included a 5-0 smashing by Inter, Torino have found a recent run of form that has seen them go undefeated in five games. A shock victory against Serie title holders Napoli has propelled them onto an undefeated streak, suggesting they should offer a tough battle against their bitter city rivals. Victory away from home would see them lie just two points behind Juventus.
Recent form
Juve's in-form striker Dusan Vlahovic has scored in successive matches, and is a threat for any opponents as the lone target man. The Serbia star should have had a brace in Juve's match against Sporting Lisbon, but shotstopper Rui Silva was in impressive form.
The Bianconeri marksman was red-hot and industrious, picking up our Man of the Match award. He should be a certainty to start against Torino.
A bright and energetic performance against Sporting Lisbon, despite a disappointing stalemate, should give Bianconeri fans some hope against their near neighbors, Forwards Jonathan David and Lois Openda will also hope to be given minutes to try and find their scoring boots to help propel Juve to a much-needed victory.
Head-to-head
The history of this fixture is a long and storied one with the two rivals locking horns 187 times. Juventus have won nearly half, boasting a hefty 97 wins and losing just 44 encounters.
Their most recent fixture saw Juventus held to a 1-1 away draw, when Kenan Yildiz scored an early goal and the then manager Thiago Motta was sent off.
Team news
Goalkeeper Carlo Pinsoglio (calf), defenders Gleison Bremer (knee), Juan Cabal (thigh), Bremer (knee), and Lloyd Kelly (thigh) as well as forward Arkadiusz Milik (muscle) remain on Juve's treatment table.
Kostic should make a return to the starting XI, with Vlahovic and Yildiz surefire starters following their formidable Champions League performances.
Torino are unlikely to make too many changes having fully rested their players during the week, with the in-form Giovanni Simeone a likely starter having already netted four goals this season. .
Shotstopper Franco Israela (muscle), defender Perr Schuurs (cruciate) and midfielder Zakaria Aboukhlal (muscle) plus forward Zanos Savva (cruciate) are sidelined. Manager Marco Baroni is banished to the stands because of his suspension
Expected line-ups
Juventus possible starting XI:
Di Gregorio - Kalulu, Gatti, Koopmeiners - Cambiaso, Kostic - McKennie, Thuram, Locatelli - Yildiz, Vlahovic
Torino possible starting XI:
Paleari - Maripan, Coco, Tameze - Lazaro, Asllani, Casedei, Pederson- Vlasic- Adams, Simeone
Old Juve prediction
Juventus 2 Torino 0
With Juventus struggling to finish chances plus David and Openda still lacking confidence, scoring plenty of goals seems unlikely. The Bianconeri have looked extremely proactive under Spalletti's tutelage. They are commanding in midfield and seem threatening in front of goal.
Torino have not impressed so far this season, despite a shock victory against Napoli, languishing13th in the league table. Juve's dominance in the Derby dalla Mole is expected to continue, with Spalletti aiming for his first home victory.
