The 27-year-old got his chance to show his worth to the under pressure Juve head coach Thiago Motta on Saturday, although his team were beaten 2-0 in Serie A.
Motta, who has turned his team into this season’s draw specialists this term, oversaw a slender home win for the Bianconeri. Belgium midfielder Samuel Mbangula slotted home on 59 minutes to make the Allianz Stadium erupt, and US ace Timothy Weah added a second 13 minutes later.
Tomori, who was raised as an Arsenal fan and still supports the Gunners, could be attracted by the English Premier League (EPL) to enhance his international career.
German Thomas Tuchel is at the helm for England, and is in the process of rebuilding the nation ahead of the prestigious 2026 FIFA World Cup finals. He is keen to make them formidable, and has historically relied on solid defending as well as aggressive possession play.
Canada-born Tomori, who played nine games for Brighton & Hove Albion during his 2017 loan from Chelsea, will be out of contract in June when his four-year deal with Milan expires.
It is very apparent that Milan are no longer the force they were. Yet they have produced some of the world’s most outstanding defenders that included Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Nesta, Thiago Silva and Jaap Stam.
Tomori has impressed during his stint in Serie A, with recently installed Milan head coach Sergio Conceicao hopeful of persuading him to pen a new deal.
Having been in and out of the starting line-up this term under Paulo Fonseca, who was given the boot in December, Tomori has started the past three matches under Conceicao.
As Tomori has been playing a bit role at Milan, there have been reports that he wants out. Both Juventus and Tottenham have apparently tabled offers for Tomori, each club happy to lay out a loan fee with an obligation to buy in the summer.
As the Bianconeri seem to have missed on landing Uruguay defender Ronald Araujo, who is reportedly close to signing a new contract at Barcelona despite his deal running until June 2026, Motto is trying to tie down Tomori for around €25million (US$25.7m).
With both Brazilian Gleison Bremer and Colombia’s Juan Cabal ruled out for the rest of the 2024/25 season because of torn anterior cruciate ligaments, Juventus desperately need to bring another new centre-back.
Motto has undeniably increased the defensive intensity of the Bianconeri, compared to his stints with Spezia and Bologna. His tactics have always included encouraging one of his center backs to move into midfield at every opportunity, which would perfectly suit the prowess and speed of Tomori.
The remit for Motto, who has high hopes for next term after overseeing a disappointing string of draws, is to add silverware for the Bianconeri. His managerial ambition could prove to be the deciding factor for Tomori, rather than tackle the physically challenging EPL.
