Juventus would like to sign Fiorentina attacker Federico Chiesa this summer, but he won’t come cheap.
There is no doubt that Juventus need to sign more star players in the summer transfer window if they want to compete for the Champions League title, which has been their clearly-stated goal since acquiring Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid in 2018.
After nabbing Arthur Melo from Barcelona in a swap deal, the Bianconeri are now targeting the best young in Serie A. And Juve will have to also make these transfers swap deals, since they won’t have the cash to buy someone like Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo outright.
According to a report from TuttoJuve.com, Juventus have come up with a plan for acquiring Fiorentina rising star Federico Chiesa. He’s long been rumored as a transfer target for the Bianconeri in 2020, but Fiorentina have been making it difficult for the Old Lady of Turin to swing a deal.
So Juve plan on selling Douglas Costa and using that money to fund a transfer for Chiesa. The Bianconeri are hoping they can sell Costa, who has interest from Manchester City and PSG. Then, they will pay 40 million euros to acquire Chiesa, throwing a player onto the deal to match Fiorentina’s evaluation of the 22-year-old forward.
It’s an ambitious deal for two reasons. Firstly, it’s highly unlikely Juve can find someone willing to spend 40 million euros on Costa, who is coming off an injury-plagued year and is getting older. He’s certainly talented enough to play for City and PSG, but recall that City have already acquired Ferran Torres for even less than 40 million euros. So they’ll have to use more than just the funds raised by a Costa sale.
Secondly, there’s no telling if Fiorentina will be interested in the player Juve stick onto the deal, and judging by the recent swap deal rumors, it’s unlikely that player will be of high value to any club. They will just throw someone onto the deal as a makeweight.
Chiesa scored 10 goals with six assists last season and is a productive, creative forward who could become a superstar player at Juventus. The Bianconeri, however, will have to be more realistic about what they can do to sign him.
