Juventus Transfers: Going after Bayern duo makes little sense

Juventus are in the market for a backup striker this winter and have a remaining need in midfield. They are expected to address their midfield issue this summer by making a big signing, with Manuel Locatelli of Sassuolo likely at the top of the list. A reunion with Paul Pogba is a dream option, while Houssem Aouar stands out as another splashy option.

According to Calciomercato (report in Italian), Juventus are also interested in Bayern Munich’s Corentin Tolisso, who has struggled to stay healthy and find his form in Bavaria after a promising start to his career in the Bundesliga.

Tolisso still has the potential to be a solid midfielder in European football, and Juve did show interest in the former Lyon man before he chose Bayern.

Meanwhile, Calciomercato mentions in the same report that the Bianconeri have interest in another Bayern player who could be easier to acquire.

Joshua Zirkzee would make more sense for Juventus than Corentin Tolisso

Die Roten have been looking to loan out promising young striker Joshua Zirkzee, who needs more playing time to develop into a consistent goal-scoring option.

A Bundesliga loan to a smaller club would be ideal, since Zirkzee could get regular playing time. But Juve are reportedly interested and could offer him an 18-month loan.

Zirkzee could be an option for Juventus, though it’s hard to see the 19-year-old wanting to join a team that has Cristiano Ronaldo, Alvaro Morata, Paulo Dybala, and Dejan Kulusevski in its ranks. While Morata is the only out-and-out striker on that list, the competition for playing time in Turin is fierce. Juventus is a huge step up, and Zirkzee could get lost in the shuffle. And from Juve’s perspective, they may still prefer to have a proven veteran option who can provide a goal in a pinch.

As for Tolisso, he makes even less sense. Maybe he’s someone to keep on the radar in the summer 2021 transfer window, but is he really better than Rodrigo Bentancur or Adrien Rabiot? Juventus need a star player and a key upgrade. They need someone who can start with Arthur Melo and/or Weston McKennie in a 4-3-3 side with three midfielders or a 4-4-2 with two central midfielders. Locatelli, Pogba, and Aouar are all much better options than Tolisso.
