Should Juventus make this Douglas Costa swap deal with Manchester United?

A recently-emerged Italian report believes that Juventus could sign the Manchester United left-back in a deal that would guarantee a permanent departure of Douglas Costa.

Almost a month ago, a story—published by Calciomercato—shed light on the fact that Manchester United had rejected a swap including Aaron Ramsey and Douglas Costa from Juventus last summer.

At that time, it was Paul Pogba who attracted a substantial amount of interest from the Bianconeri.

On the back of the failed swap deal, Aaron Ramsey stayed put at Turin and decided to give his career at Juve another chance for revitalization. On the other hand, Douglas Costa chose to join his former side Bayern Munich on a season-long loan deal.

With Ramsey—currently injured—now having made 14 Serie A appearances into the 2020-21 season, Juventus might think twice before trading him.

More from Old Juve

While there is glimmering hope for the Welshman, Douglas Costa’s resurrection in Pirlo’s side seems very unlikely.

According to a recent report in Calcio Mercato Web, Juventus are pondering upon injecting Douglas Costa in a swap deal for Manchester United’s one of the latest recruits in Alex Telles.

Telles made a switch to Old Trafford from FC Porto for £18 million last summer. Having joined the Red Devils, the former Inter man has made only 13 appearances in all competitions for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

And despite being a central figure in his time with the Liga NOS club, he finds himself behind Luke Shaw in the pecking order at Manchester United.

Hence, it has been indicated that the 28-year-old Brazilian might be looking to move on to pastures new 12 months after joining the red half of Manchester.

Should a move looks imminent, Juventus would be there to offer Douglas Costa to attain the services of Alex Telles.

Juventus don’t need Douglas Costa

When the club decided to offload him in any possible way last summer, it became clear as a crystal ball that Douglas Costa has no future under Andrea Pirlo at Juventus.

And it doesn’t seem that he has a future with Bayern either, as the 30-year-old has accumulated only 314 minutes of playing time in the German Bundesliga so far.

If we speak about the tactical aspects here, Juve’s in-game plans don’t allow a winger to play freely in his conventional position.

Pirlo prefers the 4-4-2 formation, where only one forward and another supporting striker make their way into the frontline. Not a canny defender off the ball, Costa couldn’t play on those wide midfield areas for the Old Lady.

And therefore, the chances are bright that he would end up moving far away from the Allianz Stadium—if not to Manchester United—next summer.
