3. John Charles

John Charles lifted the spirit of Juventini with his flamboyant aura back in the mid-1900s. Partnering with the likes of Giampiero Boniperti and Omar Sívori at the heart of Juventus’ offence, John Charles became an integral part of a lethal triumvirate, known as “The Holy Trident”. Born in Swansea, Charles signed for the Old Lady after running riots in the English circuit with Leeds United.

The year was 1957 when breaking the hearts of those in West Yorkshire, John Charles arrived in Turin for a then British record transfer fee of around £65,000. He stayed put there for five years before re-joining Leeds, but during those five years, he got success in turning himself from a foreigner who wished to play in the Italian league to someone that history would wish to know.

In those five years, not only did he logged 105 goals in 179 matches (per Transfermarkt), but also he helped Juventus win three Serie A titles and two Coppa Italia. He won the Capocannoniere title for scoring the most number of goals in Serie A during the 1957-58 campaign. Charles also became the third-best player in the Ballon d’Or race back in 1959. After leaving Juventus, he played for several other clubs, including AS Roma and Cardiff City, but failed to reach the heights that once he had experienced at Juventus.
