Recent form

Juve got back to winning ways, following the shock loss at Parma, with a shaky 2-0 win over Monza. Turkish talent Kenan Yildiz was shown a straight red on the stroke of half-time, which meant the hosts had to defend relentlessly for the win that sent them into fourth place.

Bologna fluffed their opportunity to leapfrog Juventus on Monday, held to a scoreless draw by Udinese, to remain fifth and a single point behind the Bianconeri.

Head-to-head

Samuel Mbangula's last-gasp goal rescued Juve to seal a hard-fought point in their thrilling 2-2 stalemate inside the Allianz Stadium last December.

Juve remain unbeaten in their past 25 Serie A matches against Bologna, having registered17 wins. The Bianconeri last lost to Bologna in 2011, a Marco Di Vaio brace was enough for a 2-0 success in Turin.

Bologna's home Serie A record against Juventus is dismal. Their last victory over the Bianconeri inside the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara came in 1998, with Juve recording 14 triumphs in their past 21 trips to Bologna.

Team news

Kenan Yildiz has been handed a two-match ban after his red card for violent conduct against Monza last Sunday.

Juve’s defence is down to the bare bones with Federico Gatti and Lloyd are both out injured, alongside long-term absentees Gleison Bremer and Juan Cabal.

Teun Koopmeiners has yet to fully recover from his Achilles issue and is unlikely to feature, while Arkadiusz Milik remains out for the season.

Right back Emil Holm is the only player unavailable for Bologna. Nicolo Casale and Dan Ndoye will return, as will head coach Vincenzo Italiano, who returns to the dugout after completing a touchline ban.

Players to watch

Juventus — Francisco Conceição

The Portuguese loanee is expected to fill the attacking position vacated by suspended Yildiz against Bologna and Lazio.

The FC Porto player has yet to convince Tudor of his ability, so these back-to-back games are crunch time for Conceicao's Juve career as well as the Bianconeri's financial future with the Champions League.

Bologna — Riccardo Orsolini

A product of Juventus’ Primavera system who is now a crucial figure for Bologna. He scored two goals in his past three home games against the Bianconeri and is seeking to add this season's tally of 12 strikes.

Orsolini joined Bologna on a permanent basis in June 2019, two years after signing for Juventus from Serie B side Ascoli for €6 million (US$6.8m). Never made a senior appearance for Juve, instead he was sent out on loan to Atalanta and Bologna.

Igor Tudor's pre-match press conference

The Croatian explained: "We have worked hard on a daily basis to prepare for this match. Bologna have a solid base that has been built up over the years, and they have a free flowing approach.

"Moreover, they are a team that run a lot and are athletically strong. Bologna's characteristics are those of an extremely physical team, difficult to face because they never give up, and in modern football physicality cancels out so much quality.

"Everyone will have to think only of the good of the team. We will miss Kenan's qualities, but whoever plays in his place will be up to the challenge and will be important for us. Yildiz will watch the game from the stands to be close to his team-mates."

Expected line-ups

Bologna possible starting XI:

Skorupski; Calabria, Beukema, Lucumi, Miranda; Freuler, Aebischer; Orsolini, Odgaard, Cambiaghi; Dallinga

Juventus possible starting XI:

Di Gregorio; Kalulu, Veiga, Cambiaso; Weah, Locatelli, Thuram, Gonzalez, McKennie, Conceicoo; Muani

Old Juve prediction

Bologna 1 Juventus 2

it’s put up or shut up time for Tudor and his aspirations of qualifying for the highly lucrative Champions League. Defeat to Bologna would be dent his dreams.

Juve’s defence is shaky, with only two fit recognised central defenders available. Yet Bologna’s atrocious home record against Juve gives a glimmer of hope.

Lazio took over fourth spot from Juventus after a 1-0 win at Empoli on Sunday, a few hours before Champions League-chasers AS Roma face Fiorentina prior to the Bologna-Juve clash.

It’s time for Tudor to stamp his authority on the battle for European places, and what better way than a statement win in Bologna before the Bianconeri tackle highflying rivals Lazio next weekend.
