With the Juventus Ultras missing in Fiorentina, having declared on social media that the club didn't deserve their support for the Serie A, Motta was next to be absent.
Cristiano Giuntoli, the club’s sporting director, had been among the big-wigs to have given Motta a vote of confidence following an emergency meeting after understrength Empoli knocked out the Coppa Italia holders.
Guintoli watched Sunday’s dismal display inside the Stadio Artemio Franchi, when Motta’s starting line and 4-2-3-1 formation left much to be desired.
Motta may regret overlooking the two forwards and is on thin ice, especially as there’s the international break when a change of head coach would allow a new direction with nine Serie A games remaining.
Guintoli hits out
Guintoli took over the post-match duties from Motta and fumed: “Clearly, we [the club] are very unhappy, we’ve played two games below our level.
“We have to be clear headed in analysing what’s happened over the last few days. We have to do it with balance, on and off the pitch, to understand together what we have to put right.
"We were the best defence in the league and we conceded seven goals in a week, which means we all have to find this balance together.
“This is also confirmed by the fact that until now the team had always reacted well to a negative performance. and this time it didn't happen.”
He then calmed down and showed support for missing manager Motta by stating: “We [the club] are still convinced that we can come out of this moment united, and with Thiago Motta.
“Our project started a long time ago, when we had to overhaul the squad and reduce wages, so some difficulties are to be expected.
“Difficult moments make us stronger together, so it's time to be united. But we must not think about that now, because we must all work together. Our only thought is to qualify for next season's Champions League.”
