The Tuscan, who has in recent months been studying English, has been heavily linked with a move to either AS Roma next season, the English Premier League (EPL) or to the highly lucrative Saudi Pro League.
Allegri lost his job as head coach with the Bianconeri two days after securing the Coppa Italia. He lost his cool and furiously ranted at match officials during their 1-0 triumph over Atalanta last May, which resulted in being brandished a red card.
Since seeing red the 57-year-old has been waiting in the wings for a suitable move back into management.
Claudio Ranieri, appointed AS Roma head coach last November, will step down from his role to serve as an advisor with the club. This leaves an opening, with the Giallorossi undoubtedly demanding a tried and tested top-level coach. Allegri is likely to be in the mix.
Allegri enjoyed an outstanding career at Juventus, where he won 12 trophies, which comprised five consecutive league titles (2015-2019), five Coppa Italia crowns and two Supercoppa Italiana titles.
He has understandably attracted plenty of interest, especially with EPL sides such as Manchester United and West Ham, although his wage demands were a sticking point with these clubs.
Allegri seems keen to compete in the EPL, and could soon be plying his trade in England this term.
Sleeping giants Tottenham Hotspur are very likely to be soon seeking a new head coach, as they are languishing towards the bottom of their league following an injury crisis at the club.
Tough-talking Aussie Postecoglou is on thin ice, yet he confidently reminded reporters during a pre-season press conference of his ability to land trophies. He boldly said: “I always win things in my second year.”
The 2007/08 League Cup was the last major honour that Spurs lifted. Postecoglou’s side still retains an interest in three cup competitions, namely the Europa League, the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup.
Having masterminded a shock first leg 1-0 success over Liverpool in their Carabao Cup semi-final, it is widely believed that the second leg on 4 February could be the make-or-break game for Postecoglou.
This would perfectly suit Allegri’s timeframe, as the former Juventus boss appears to be keeping his options open with Al-Ahli a potential destination in June.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has not been afraid to wield the axe in the past, and is under pressure from irate fans who are constantly calling for current head coach Ange Postecoglou to be sacked.
However, Allegri will not commit himself to taking over the reins at any club until his agent Giovanni Branchini is back from Australia at the end of January.
Allegri, who proved to be too much of an expensive acquisition for West Ham this month, was spotted in the Tottenham Stadium crowd during November’s thrilling 2-2 Europa League stalemate between Spurs and AS Roma.
It is understood that Allegri had informal talks with Levy, having been highly recommended by the former Tottenham managing director Fabio Paratici who still gives free advice to the EPL club.
Paractici spent 11 years at Juventus, where he was sporting director and managing director, before joining Spurs in June 2021. He resigned from his role in London following a worldwide 30-month ban in March 2023, after being found guilty of false accounting while working for the Bianconeri.
Saudi press reports have been circling that serial winner Allegri has agreed to become head coach of Al-Ahli in June, although if that’s true then his appointment will only be made official at the end of the season. The multimillion-dollar agreement has yet to be secured.
Gabriele Cioffi, the former coach of Serie A strugglers Udinese, is expected to be unveiled as the new boss. However, his appointment is only anticipated to be until the end of the season if the deal with Allegri materialises.
If Allegri joins then he will no doubt be delighted that Al-Ahli have a trio of former Serie A stars, namely former Juventus defender Merih Demiral, ex-AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie and former AS Roma defender Roger Ibanez. He could encourage the club to bring more, including some of the current crop of Juventus players like out–of-favour midfielder Douglas Luiz
Allegri’s tactical prowess would be an asset wherever he decides to go, although having to steer a stuttering side back on track will be new territory for the former Juventus hero.
