Center-back Nicolo Bertola, who missed out earning promotion to the top tier after Spezia finished third last season, may get a shot at competing in the top tier.
The U21 Italy international was wanted by both Inter Milan and Juve last year, but nothing materialised following his agents reportedly demanding outrageous salary demands of five times his Spezia weekly wage.
Juve in chase
Atalanta and Juve made late inquiries during the winter transfer window, neither club were not put off by the €1.5 million (US$1.7m) price tag, but a deal failed to materialize.
The Bianconeri had the edge over their rivals to secure Bertola’s signature, as they would have loaned him back for Spezia’s promotion push.
He stayed put at Spezia, but refused to extend his contract that expires at the end of June. Bertola’s impressive displays have earned him a plethora of admirers, and his market value has quadrupled since February.
Question marks
Juventus are in the process of trying to tempt Bertola to sign for them. Although he may have reservations about getting minutes for the Italian giants, especially as there’s no concrete answer about who will be appointed head coach for the 2025/26 campaign.
The Turin titans could collaborate with Sassuolo, who were crowned Serie B champions, by signing Bertola and then loaning him to the club.
Juve and Sassuolo have previously had a successful co-ownership process involving striker Domenico Berardi, who may well finally join the Bianconeri this summer.
Hat-trick of goals
Bertola was Spezia’s star player last term with three Serie B goals in 28 appearances, but they cannot cash in on their youth academy product once he becomes a free agent.
Atalanta, Inter and Juve seem ready to pounce for the combative and exciting prospect.
A move to Juventus, who could immediately loan him to Sassuolo, could prove favorable in order for Bertola to cut his teeth in Serie A as the Bianconeri appear to be monitoring numerous defenders.
