What’s at stake
Following a fortnight off for the international break, both sides will be chasing precious points to maintain interest in winning this year’s Scudetto. Como and Juventus have stuttered so far in Serie A, like their rivals around the top of the table.
Juve head coach Igor Tudor is feeling the pressure following a run of five draws in all competitions, although a change in the dugout is not imminent unless the Bianconeri get badly beaten both in Como and their Champions League midweek clash at Real Madrid.
Como are also in need of maximum points, because despite being big spenders during the summer they lie eighth with just two victories from their six top-flight encounters and have only found the back of the net seven times.
Tudor’s troops have been shaky in defence, although they managed to hold AC Milan to a scoreless draw in their last match. At the other end of the pitch, supersub Dusan Vlahovic remains their top scorer having netted four goals after arriving off the bench, with goal poacher Jonathan David on target once and unorthodox striker Lois Openda yet to break his duck in a Juve jersey.
Recent form
Juventus remain unbeaten in league and Champions League action, but it is drama rather than entertainment that they are currently serving up. A hat-trick of wins and a trio of stalemates in Serie A leaves the Bianconeri still in with a shot of landing the league title.
Since their confidence-boosting Derby d’Italia home victory over Inter Milan, fans and pundits have been perplexed by the lack of ruthlessness and Tudor’s bizarre tactical approaches.
The constant second-half substitutions, seemingly to appease the three highly-paid strikers, has yet to pay dividends apart from Vlahovic’s haul of goals.
Como boss Cesc Fabregas severely strengthened his side over the summer, with a solid defense but scoring a problem despite attacking midfielder Nico Paz being involved in six of their goals this term with three strikes.
The Lariani were held to 1-1 by Ivan Juric’s Atalanta in their last outings, to make it back-to-back stalemates.
Head-to-head
Juventus have only lost three times to Como, twice on their travels, in 29 clashes. The Bianconeri have registered 15 wins, with eight triumphs from 14 contests inside the Stadio Guiseppe Sinigaglia.
Last season Juve did the double over Como, overseen by the then manager Thiago Motta. The Bianconeri soared to a 3-0 success at the Allianz Stadium in August, and in February’s return encounter won 2-1 in Como.
Team news
Defender duo Juan Cabal (thigh) and Gleison Bremer (knee), expected to be sidelined for two months, means that former Italy international Daniele Rugani should be favored by Tudor.
Shotstopper Carlos Pinsoglio (leg) and Fabio Miretti (thigh) are Juve’s only other players sidelined.
Vlahovic netted for Serbia against minnows Andorra in their World Cup qualifier while Canada’s David and Belgium’s Openda fired blanks on the international stage.
As usual Juve will tackle depleted opponents, with Fabregas missing half-a-dozen players. Former Juve striker Alvaro Morata, on loan from Milan, could get the nod over Greek forward Anastasios Douvikas.
Como will be without defenders Alberto Dossena (knee) and Ignace Van Der Brempt (muscle), midfielder trio Assane Diao (foot), Jesus Rodriguez (suspension) and Sergi Roberto (muscle) as well as forward Jayden Addai (muscle).
Expected line-ups
Juventus possible starting XI:
Di Gregorio - Gatti, Rugani, Kelly - Kalulu, Thuram, Locatelli, Cambiaso - Conceicao, Yildiz - Vlahovic
Como possible starting XI:
Butez - Smolcic, Carlos, Ramon, Valle - Perrone, Da Cunha - Vojvoda, Paz, Kuhn - Morata
Igor Tudor quotes
“We’ve had two sessions to prepare for Como, which will be a tough game. We’ve huge respect for them, but we want to go there and play our own game.
“We needed to recover a little, and the international players have been returning one at a time from their respective national teams.
“A team has to have an identity, but things happen that force changes one way or another, so a team can’t always look the same because there are always variables. I spend every day thinking about how to get more out of my players."
Old Juve prediction
Como 1 Juventus 1
With draws the most recent results for both teams, and a single point precious to keep within touching distance of the top four, a stalemate seems most likely.
Tudor has to rejig his defense and select the most in-form striker to gradually win back belief from fans and pundits. Although Juve have notched eight goals from their last three Serie A trips at Como, expect a low-scoring affair.
The last time Como beat the Bianconeri in the top tier was their 2-0 home victory in 1952, with Juventus having not tasted Serie A defeat to the Lariani in their past 23 encounters.
