What’s at stake
There is immense pressure riding on the final score inside the Olimpico, both managers having produced inconsistent results. This clash potentially offers a confidence boosting triumph, so is a mouth-watering contest that could end up as a bore draw or be jam-packed with drama and entertainment.
Juventus boss Igor Tudor has overseen a recent poor run, with his troops failing to find the back of the net in their past three games. The no-nonsense Croatian is not afraid to ruffle a few feathers, and is already at loggerheads with general manager Damien Comolli.
Lazio head coach Maurizio Sarri, who won his only Scudetto when in charge of Juve, has picked up just two victories from seven Serie A matches. If a change of manager for either club is required, then this would probably occur when the two-week international break kicks off in the second week of November.
Recent form
The Bianconeri have been toothless upfront despite a trio of highly-paid forwards. Supersub Dusan Vlahovic remains top scorer, having netted four goals after arriving off the bench, with goal poacher Jonathan David having failed to score since his Serie A debut in August and unorthodox striker Lois Openda yet to break his duck in a Juve jersey.
Juventus are on a torrid seven-match winless run, having tasted back-to-back defeats in league and Champions League action.
Things have nosedived since the enthralling Derby d’Italia home victory. Tudor has made some bizarre tactical approaches with aimless substitutions ever since their win over Inter Milan.
Lazio, who tasted a trio of defeats from their initial four games this term have picked up points from their past three matches. They thrashed struggling Genoa 3-0, grabbed a last-gasp equalizer in the six-goal thriller against Torino then held Atalanta to a scoreless draw.
Sarri’s side have collected just two wins from their past 15 Serie A home games, although have become a draw specialist with nine stalemates in Rome.
Head-to-head
Juventus boast an impressive winning record over Lazio with 87 successes, their best record against a Serie A club. The Biancocelesti have a haul of 36 victories over Juve, with the teams sharing the spoils in 39 meetings.
Lazio’s Serie A home record against the Bianconeri is more even. The Rome side have won 27 matches, lost 34 games and settled for 20 draws. The clubs fought out a 1-1 stalemate last May, with their last back-to-back draws against each other dating back to the 2005/06 campaign.
Team news
Shotstopper Carlos Pinsoglio (leg), defensive duo Gleison Bremer (knee) and Juan Cabal (thigh) plus midfielder Edon Zhegrova (leg) are Juve’s sidelined players.
Italy international Manuel Locatelli should resume the captaincy, having been controversially dropped against Real Madrid following his Instagram post.
Vlahovic, who is experiencing a dry spell for Juve, last netted for Serbia against minnows Andorra in their World Cup qualifier. Yet he has notched seven goals against Lazio since arriving in Italy.
As Tudor tries to appease his strikeforce, David is likely to start over Vlahovic. Canada’s David and Belgium’s Lois Openda fired blanks on the international stage, and have been ineffective in front of goal for Juventus this campaign.
Lazio will be without defenders Samuel Gigot (muscle) and Luca Pellegrini (knee), midfielder pair Fisayo Dele-Bashiru (thigh) and Nicolo Rovella (leg), winger Matteo Cancellieri (muscle) as well as striker Taty Castellanos (muscle).
Juve will be trying to prevent Lazio skipper Mattia Zaccagni from scoring, as the Italian left winger has finished on the winning side for Lazio in all 10 matches where he scored.
Expected line-ups
Juventus possible starting XI:
Di Gregorio - Gatti, Rugani, Kalulu, Cambiaso - Koopmeiners, Thuram, Locatelli - Conceicao, Yildiz - David
Lazio possible starting XI:
Provedel - Lazzari, Gila, Romagnoli, Marusic - Guendouzi, Cataldi, Basic - Isaksen, Dia, Zaccagni
Old Juve prediction
Lazio 1 Juventus 1
Although Lazio have a limited amount of quality compared to the Turin titans, morale is low among both clubs with managers ill-affording another defeat.
Juventus finished a distant second at Como and Real Madrid, with the constant second-half changes leaving the side perplexed by Tudor’s tactics.
The visitors should score a long overdue goal, having netted in 19 of their past 20 Serie A visits to tackle Lazio. This meeting has a score draw written all over it, unless there are substitute surprises from Tudor that would result in a one-goal margin to bag maximum points.
