What’s at stake

Juve have beaten Parma in all four Serie A opening encounters and will be aiming to unleash new center forward Jonathan David to kick off their campaign at home.

Although bookmakers are making Juventus the third favorites to clinch the Scudetto, behind last season’s dominant duo of Inter Milan and Napoli, the reality is that they appear to be also-rans after failing to heavily invest in the transfer market this summer.

Money does not buy success, as the Bianconeri proved after Thiago Motta splashed the cash and failed miserably. His successor, Igor Tudor, will surely realise that it would take a miracle to claim their first Serie A crown since 2020 without bringing in new faces.

Parma, who finished last season in 16th-place, have replaced manager Cristian Chivu with former Juventus youth team coach Carlos Cuesta. Inter Milan swooped for Chivu, who only lost one of his eight clashes against top-half teams after joining Parma in February.

Cuesta, who was the Arsenal assistant manager to Mikel Arteta, will become the third-youngest coach to debut in the top tier for the Juventus contest aged 30 years and 26 days.

Recent form

Juventus are on an unbeaten run of four games after suffering back-to-back defeats at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, with their most recent match earning Tudor his first piece of silverware as permanent manager. Juve beat hosts Atalanta to claim the Bortolotti Trophy.

Following a dismal display behind closed doors, held 2-2 by Serie B side AC Reggiana, Tudor’s tweaks have delivered the goods. The Bianconeri still look vulnerable at the back, but have a safe pair of hands with Michele Di Gregorio between the sticks.

Juve scored an impressive triumph at German giants Borussia Dortmund, and followed it up with a win over the Juventus Next Gen in a friendly festive encounter.

Cuesta has overseen four friendlies and won his first competitive match. He started with a scoreless draw at German Bundesliga side Werder Bremen, drew 1-1 at home to Mallorca, beat Serie C outfit Vercelli 3-1 then fell 2-1 to Heidenheim.

Mateo Pellegrino bagged a brace as Parma breezed past Serie B team Pescara 2-0 in the opening round of the Coppa Italia, which set up a home tie against Spezia.

Head-to-head

With Parma playing back-to-back Serie A seasons for the first time since 2021, securing their top-flight status was helped by their shock 1-0 success over Juventus inside the Stadio Tardini.

Juventus had to bounce back twice to share the spoils with visiting Parma last October. The US duo of Weston McKennie and Timothy Weah were each on target with an equalizer during the thrilling 2-2 draw in Turin.

Juventus have only lost 11 times to Parma in their 54 meetings, with 16 stalemates and the Bianconeri registering 27 triumphs.

Team news

Tudor is expected to start with David as the target man, although could swap him for striker Dusan Vlahovic if things do not go as smoothly as planned, as David is a goal poacher rather than a traditional forward.

Francisco Conceicao and Joao Mario, both acquired from FC Porto during the summer, add attacking elements so should play a key part in creating chances.

Turkish talent Kenan Yildiz, who has been nominated for the coveted Kopa Trophy Ballon d’Or award, was exceptional at the Club World Cup and should excite the home supporters against Parma.

While Brazilian center-back Bremer, the second highest paid player at Juventus, makes a return from his long-term ACL issue, Tudor has Juan Cabal (knee), Fabio Miretti (thigh) and Nicolo Savona (ankle) sidelined with injury.

Parma have sold a couple of their stars. Striker Ange-Yoan Bonny has followed Chivu to Inter, and teenage defender Giovanni Leoni moved to Liverpool.

Matija Frigan,  purchased as a replacement for Bonny, has suffered an ACL rupture leaving the formidable Pellegrino to spearhead Parma’s attack. Center-back Botond Balogh (suspension), midfielder Hernani (thigh) and Jacob Ondrejka (broken leg) are absentees.

Players to watch

Juventus — Jonathan David

All eyes will be focused on Juve’s latest marksman making his Serie A debut, especially after he scored his first goal for the Turin titans in spectacular fashion against Atalanta.

Tudor desperately needs firepower, as the club finished with just 58 Serie A goals last term, and will be aiming to improve their scoring record from set-pieces.

Canada hot-shot David boasts a prolific record for club and country, bagging 87 Ligue 1 goals in five seasons and netting 10 times in 18 Champions League appearances for LOSC Lille.

Parma — Emanuele Valeri

The 26-year-old left-back has a knack for providing goal assists wherever he has played in Italy, so is expected to be a dangerman and help set up Pellegrino.

He played a pivotal role in Serie A for relegation-threatened Parma last term, having arrived from Frosinone. He scored twice and set up eight goals from their woeful tally of just 44 strikes.

Juventus manager quotes — Igor Tudor

“I like when you play and there is something at stake. I don’t like pre-season, the friendlies. The team is ready, we want to start well.

“The players have trained well and the feelings are positive. We must push forward with as many players as possible but without losing balance or risking counters.

“Predictions don't matter, you just have to work hard and focus on each game as it comes.”

Expected line-ups

Juventus possible starting XI:

Di Gregorio - Kalulu, Bremer, Kelly - Mario, Thuram, Locatelli, Cambiaso - Conceicao, Yildiz - David

Parma possible starting XI :

Suzuki - Delprato, Circati, Valenti - Lovik, Bernabe, Keita, Valeri - Almqvist, Ordonez - Pellegrino

Old Juve prediction

Juventus 2 Parma 0

With the Bianconeri gradually looking sharper, and a plethora of individual talent, they should prove too hot to handle for their Emilian opponents.

Cuesta will not be daunted by the big occasion, having been a key member at Arsenal since 2020. He proved against Pescara that he knows how to win, although his side should have been more ruthless.

Juventus have won 10 out of their 18 meetings against Parma, only tasting four defeats. They are overwhelming favorites to add to their tally and give the home supporters something to cheer about following their failure to bolster the squad like rival clubs.
