Recent form
Juve have settled for the share of the spoils in their past Serie A games, drawing 1-1 at Bologna and Lazio. Yet the Bianconeri are in prime position to seal a top four spot, which would result in Champions League soccer next season.
The Bianconeri have registered five wins from their last six matches at the Allianz Stadium, while Udinese have tasted three defeats from their past six away games.
Udinese failed to find the back of the net throughout April, but bounced back with a 2-1 triumph at Cagliari only to stumble to a shock 2-1 home defeat to already relegated Monza.
Head-to-head
An own goal and a strike from Nicolo Savona earned Juventus a hard-fought 2-0 success in last November’s league encounter at Udinese, to make it five wins from past six encounters.
It was a welcome win on the 127th anniversary of Juve being founded, following two straight Serie A draws against Inter Milan and newly-promoted Parma. The Bianconeri are in the same situation, coming into Sunday’s showdown on the back of a pair of league draws.
Juventus have played Udinese 21 times in Turin, victorious on 17 occasions and tasting four defeats. The sides have yet to draw on Juve’s home turf.
Team news
Kenan Yildiz will no longer be a teenager on his return for Juventus. The Turkish talent enjoyed his 20th birthday during his two-match ban, following his red card for violent conduct against Monza.
Interim head coach Igor Tudor is forced to shuffle his pack because of injuries and suspensions.
Pierre Kalulu was given his marching orders in last week’s draw at Lazio, while Savona and Khephren Thuram both serve a one-match suspension for accumulating disciplinary points.
Juve’s defence is down to the bare bones, including much missed long-term absentees Gleison Bremer and Juan Cabal. Andrea Cambiaso (thigh) and Lloyd Kelly (thigh) are expected back from injury, although could both start on the bench.
Manuel Locatelli could turn out as an emergency center-back. Federico Gatti made a four-minute cameo appearance against Lazio, following his broken fibula. While Teun Koopmeiners (Achilles) and Dusan Vlahovic (thigh) are back in contention for a starting berth, but forward Arkadiusz Milik (calf) remains out for the season.
Udinese’s Lorenzo Lucca, the tallest player in Serie A at 2.01 meters, will be absent from the clash against his long-term admirers. He is firmly on the radar of a summer move to Inter Milan, Juventus and Napoli. Lucca has been served a one-match ban, for accumulating points from yellow cards. The visitors will miss their target man and skipper Florian Thauvin (ankle), a free scoring winger.
At the other end of the pitch Jaka Bijol (ankle) is doubtful while Isaak Toure (knee) will be missing. Although Udinese shotstopper Maduka Okoye has been impressive regardless of his defensive line-up. The 25-year-old Dutch-Nigerian, being monitored by Premier League outfit AFC Bournemouth and Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven, kept a clean sheet against Bologna last month.
Players to watch
Juventus — Dusan Vlahovic
The Serbia striker has yet to score a goal under Tudor’s brief tenure, and has two more Serie A matches to break that duck. With talks stalling about extending his contract past the end of next season, a move seems to suit Vlahovic and the club.
Premier League scouts are anticipated to be attending Juve’s final league match of the campaign, with Vlahovic attracting attention from Aston Villa, Turkish titans Fenerbahce, Inter Milan and an undisclosed Saudi Pro League club.
Udinese — Jurgen Ekkelenkamp
The Dutch attacking midfielder will be the player that the home defense needs to keep tabs on, as without Lucca and Thauvin the onus is on Ekkelenkamp to provide a goal or two.
The 25-year-old scored an impressive equaliser in the 1-1 stalemate at Napoli in February, and is continuing to attract the attention from major teams including Lazio and Napoli.
End of an era?
With a handful of players likely to turn out in a Juve jersey inside the Allianz Stadium for the last time, it could also spell the end of Serie A action for Igor Tudor.
The Bianconeri are understood to be targeting a reunion between Antonio Conte and Antonio Pintus to tackle the Serie A 2025/26 campaign, which would end Tudor's tenure.
Conte, who has guided Napoli to the top of the table with two matches remaining, is reportedly unhappy at the club. A return to Juventus is a possibility,
Real Madrid's fitness coach Pintus, a Turin native, has received an offer from Juve. The 63-year-old enjoyed two spells at Juventus, from 1991 to 1998 and for the 2006/07 season in Serie B. Pintus has with Real Madrid since 2021, but manager Carlo Ancelotti is leaving at the end of the season and replaced by Xabi Alonso.
Conte was playing for Juventus during Pintus' first stint at the club, and the pair later worked together when the Lecce native was Inter Milan head coach.
Expected line-ups
Juventus possible starting XI:
Di Gregorio; Gatti, Locatelli, Veiga; Costa, McKennie, Luiz, Weah; Yildiz; Muani, Vlahovic
Udinese possible starting XI:
Okoye; Kristensen, Ehizibue, Solet; Modesto, Zarraga, Karlstrom, Payero, Kamara; Ekkelenkamp; Davis
Old Juve prediction
Juventus 2 Udinese 1
Tudor’s troops are on the cusp of qualifying for the lucrative Champions League, and cannot afford a slip-up in their penultimate Serie A game against Udinese.
With both teams having to settle for a partly makeshift defensive line-up, there could be a cluster of mistakes in the penalty area. Should Kolo Muani, Vlahovic and Yildiz lead the attack and gel, then Juve could make mincemeat out of Udinese. Although nerves could play a significant part with the Bianconeri eager to pick up maximum points.
Confidence should play a big factor, Udinese tasted a terrible defeat in their last outing while Juve could have picked up maximum points had Kalulu not been sent off at Lazio.
