What’s at stake

Juve are in pole position to secure a top two finish in Group G, which will secure further involvement in the highly-lucrative 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

The Bianconeri lead second-placed Manchester City courtesy of superior goal difference and sit three points ahead of both Al-Ain FC and Wydad AC.

Juve’s Club World Cup debut has got off to a flyer and will be aiming to maintain their momentum against African opponents who have lost every Club World Cup contest against European clubs. They have suffered defeats to Real Madrid (2000), Bayern Munich (2013) and Manchester City (2025).

Recent form

Juve polished off their Serie A season with back-to-back wins to clinch Champions League soccer next term.

Their 5-0 thumping of UAE heavyweights Al-Ain FC in Washington D.C. was the biggest winning margin by a team making their Club World Cup debut. Kolo Muani and Francisco Conceicao bagged braces, with Turkish talent Kenan Yildiz also on target in a rout inside the Audi Field last Wednesday.

Casablanca-based Wydad AC are on a three-match losing streak without scoring. They lost 1-0 in friendlies against FC Porto and Sevilla before suffering a 2-0 defeat at the hands of defending champions Manchester City.

They finished sixth in the Botola, polishing off their domestic season with three victories under newly-installed head coach Amine Benhachem.

Team news

Head coach Igor Tudor still has center-back Bremer and striker Arkadiusz Milik sidelined by long-term injuries.

With Conceicao, Kolo Muani and Yildiz having superbly found the back of the net last time out, it seems a tough call to warrant bringing back last season’s top scorer Dusan Vlahovic back to the starting XI.

The pivotal quartet of Andrea Cambiaso, Conceicao, Federico Gatti and Weston McKennie need to be careful of being cautioned as another yellow card will result in being suspended for next week’s final group game against Manchester City in Florida.

Players to watch

Juventus — Kenan Yildiz

There seems no stopping the Turkish talent, who went from strength to strength last term and got his groove back. Juve have repeatedly issued a hands off policy to a clutch of Premier League teams.

With Tudor’s attacking formation paying dividends against Al-Ain FC, Yildiz is expected to add further firepower and maybe cap last term’s breakthrough season with a goal or two against Wydad AC.

Wydad AC — Thembinkosi “Nyoso” Lorch

Veteran attacking midfielder Thembinkosi “Nyoso” Lorch signed on loan from South Africa side Mamelodi Sundowns to tackle the Club World Cup.

The 31-year-old was fearless against Manchester City in Philadelphia and he could prove tricky to tame. His three shots and seven touches in the box caused the Manchester City defenders immense problems. Lorch’s relentless exquisite passes into the final third kept carving open scoring opportunities.

Expected line-ups

Juventus possible starting XI:

Di Gregorio; Savona, Kalulu, Kelly; Costa, Thuram, McKennie, Cambiaso; Conceicao, Yildiz; Muani

Wydad AC possible starting XI:

Benabid; Moufi, Ferreira, Boutouil, Meijers, Moufid; Moubarik, Zemraoui, Amrabat, Lorch; Rayhi

Old Juve prediction

Juventus 2 Wydad AC 0

Maximum points are essential for both teams, and for Juve to make further progress is a real money-spinner. Confidence and self-belief should be the deciding factors, which would seem to give Juventus the edge for what could be a bruising battle.

The last time Juventus were so goal–hungry was their 6-1 thrashing of Salernitana 6-1 in the 2023/24 Coppa Italia. Tudor will be seeking a repeat performance of their first-half against Al-Ain FC, but the stakes are higher and Wydad AC proved against Manchester City that they are not a pushover.
