Misfiring Juventus survive spot-kick drama in bore draw

A rare clean sheet and a precious point for the stuttering Bianconeri leaves the club languishing in fifth place before the two-week international break.

Igor Tudor's unbeaten start to the season, in both league and Champions League action, continued with a hard-fought scoreless draw in Turin against AC Milan. US soccer star was guilty of missing his second-half penalty, while shotstopper Michele Di Gregorio make a late save to deny Rafael Leao.

Tudor admitted in the post-match press conference: "Pressure is a part of sport, it's part of this club. At Juventus you need to earn everything. It wasn't an easy game tonight."

Before the showdown Juventus manager Tudor must have been feeling the heat after four draws on the spin. While former Bianconeri boss Max Allegri had witnessed his side slip from top spot in Serie A to third place both AS Roma and Napoli won earlier in the day.

With Juan Cabal (thigh) having joined team-mates Gleison Bremer (knee) and Fabio Miretti (thigh) on the treatment table, Tudor made a trio of changes from the midweek Champions League draw at Villarreal.

Shotstopper Mattia Perin and Teun Koopmeiners were dropped to the bench, with Cabal injured.Di Gregorio, defender Daniele Rugani and winger Francisco Conceicao stepped into the starting line-up.

It was a big occasion for Kenan Yildiz, who has shone all season in Serie A, as he had Arsenal scouts inside the Allianz Stadium checking him out during the heavyweight encounter against Milan.

Yet it was a far from memorable match, with the first half a cagey and uneventful affair that lacked the flair expected from such talented squads.

Mike Maignan, back from injury, brilliantly stopped Federico Gatti's point-blank volley just after the interval to give the contest much-needed excitement.

Rare Pulisic penalty blunder

This was taken up another notch in the 53rd minute when referee Marco Guida pointed to the spot following Lloyd Kelly's challenge on Milan striker Santiago Gimenez, who was waiting for an aerial pass from 40-year-old Luka Modric.

Pulisic surprisingly fired his spot-kick over the target, which was only the second time he had failed to convert a penalty following February's save by Torino keeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.

Both managers altered their attack. Allegri introduced Portugal winger Leao for Gimenez and Ruben Loftus-Cheek for Youssouf Fofana just after the hour-mark.

Tudor responded with an audacious triple swap to freshen things up by withdrawing his target man Jonathan David as well as both wingers Conceicao and Yildiz on 69 minutes. The arrival of Dusan Vlahovic being paired with Lois Openda was a gamble that failed, with the pair as ineffective as David.

Livewire Leao sent a cheeky attempt from his own half, which Di Gregorio scrambled to save, and shortly after miskicked a glorious close-range chance to break the deadlock that prompted Allegri to send on Christopher Nkunku for Pulisic.

Leao received a masterful pass from Modric behind the defense, but scuffed his 90th-minute effort and the backline were swift to block Loftus-Cheek's follow-up.

Juve serve up a boring stalemate

A dull draw rather than a classic, with Juve looking their usual disheveled selves after their second-half substitutions. The valuable point leaves them sitting outside the Serie A top four and Milan lie third.

Although Yildiz will have arguably suffered the biggest disappointment, failing for the first time this season to ignite the Serie A stage in a Juve jersey while being monitored by Premier League scouts.

There will surely be questions raised about Tudor with five successive draws, which simply are not part of Juve's winning mentality.

Tudor added: "There's a sense of positivity, We tried to get the win but we weren't able to, and we're disappointed about that. It was a different game to what we usually play.

"Nobody here enjoys not winning, but I liked the performances that I saw from the guys. [Jonathan] David didn't score, but I liked his movement. [Daniele] Rugani is always ready, he's a reliable guy."
