Premier League interest resurfaces in Juve's defensive rock

With the Bianconeri looking shaky in defense, the prospect of losing a center-back to an English giant is grim news.

Gleison Bremer missed the majority of last season following a knee injury and is back in business, getting used to Igor Tudor’s tactical approach of playing three at the back.

Although Juventus would like to bolster their defense in the winter, for an assault on the Scudetto and making an impact in the Champions League, two English clubs have set their sights on the former Torino star.

Manchester United and Liverpool both need to shore up their defense, and with Bremer on their radar could lure him during the winter transfer window. His ability to provide key passes in the build up to attacks has caught their attention.

The 28-year-old could put himself in better contention to add to his five Brazil caps if he is plying his trade in the Premier League rather than Serie A, especially with the FIFA World Cup finals next next.

He came through the Clube Atletico Mineiro in Brazil before joining Torino in a €5.8 million (US$6.8m) deal seven years ago and made over 100 appearances. He moved across the city for €46.9m (US$55.1m) in July 2022, signing for the then head coach Max Allegri, and has sported the Juve jersey 95 times.

Juve's solid starter in defense

His first two seasons resulted in starting all 83 matches for Juve, and made Bremer a rock in defense that was admired by a plethora of European giants.

Bremer extended his contract until 2029 last year, which increased his release clause towards the €80m (US$94m) mark, when Thiago Motta was manager. He became the second highest earner at the club, behind Dusan Vlahovic, to earn an annual wage of €9.2m (US$10.8m).

Last summer his release fee was €60m (US$70.5m) with Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United circling and expected to renew their interest during January’s transfer window.

However, he suffered a season-ending Cruciate ligament tear in October’s Champions League clash against LOSC Lille in a tussle for the ball with Edon Zhegrova who is now playing for Juventus.
