The 42-year-old, lured from Bologna by Juve sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli, failed to find the winning formula enough during his 42 matches at the helm of the Titan giants.

His record of 18 wins, 16 draws and eight reversals means that the former Italy international boasts Juventus’ third worst win percentage record in almost 100 years.

Success has always been part of the Bianconeri’s DNA, with the club frequently dismissing their manager even after winning trophies.

Five Serie A wins on the bounce

Following a run of five unconvincing Serie A victories, which propelled Juventus to become outsiders to win the Scudetto, things fell apart.

Motta’s suitability was constantly questioned after his initial impressive six weeks. Fans and pundits were perplexed by his team selection, always changing the captaincy, pivotal players falling out of favour, incoming transfers and his stubbornness to stick to his tactics rather than adapt depending on the opponents.

With so many stalemates, the Bianconeri slipped down the table and only after five wins on the spin were the club ever considered title challengers.

The back-to-back hefty defeats to Atalanta and Fiorentina, conceding seven goals and failing to score, proved to be the final straw for the Bianconeri hierarchy.

Faith in Motta evaporated

There was no faith in Motta to turn things around for the final nine league games, when precious points will be required to secure a fourth-place finish and earn a Champions League berth. Motta only managed to win 13 Serie A games out of 29 at Juventus.

His four victories from 10 Champions League matches, and poor showing in both the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana left Motta with a dismal 43 per cent win record.

Motta’s record as Juventus coach was only better than the club’s worse results of managers competing in at least games by the helm is only Sandro Puppo (24 per cent, 1955-57) and Luigi Delneri (40 per cent, 2010/11).

Juventus pulled the trigger on Sunday afternoon, Motta replaced by ex-Lazio manager Igor Tudor until the end of the season.
