There had been speculation all season that the 23-year-old Italian would make an exit from the club that he joined in 2015.
With a two-horse chase for the midfielder, Fagioli decided to remain in Italy rather than join French highflyers Olympique de Marseille, who have been a revelation since head coach Roberto De Zerbi joined from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer.
As Fagioli was slapped with a seven-month ban due to illegal betting in October 2023, he missed most of the last season.
He was expected to play a pivotal role this term under Motta’s progressive style of play. The head coach publicly slammed Fagioli and that effectively closed the door on his Juve career.
Fagioli soon became a forgotten man despite showing some early season promise, with Motta overlooking the versatile midfielder whose playing style used to be compared to Juventus legend Andrea Pirlo.
He had surprisingly only featured for 10 minutes in Juventus’ past five Serie A matches.
Fagiolo found it virtually impossible to achieve a starting berth this term having fallen out of favour, plus he was competing with Teun Koopmeiners, Manuel Locatelli, Douglas Luiz, Khephren Thuram and Weston McKennie.
Despite his exile, there were rumours swirling last year that Fagioli would be involved in a swap deal with elite clubs like Manchester City, Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain.
Nothing materialised, and during the latest transfer window it became a straight choice for Fagioli to decide between Fiorentina and Marseille in a last-gasp deal.
Both top tier clubs approached the Bianconeri with a loan offer, with Juve valuing Fagioli at €20 million (US$20.6m). Fiorentina’s bid included an option to buy while Marseille’s potential deal was with an obligation to buy, but only under certain conditions inserted in the clause.
Sixth-placed Fiorentina have forked out €2.5m (US$2.6m) for Fagioli, with the option to sign him on a permanent basis for a fee of €13.5m (US$13.9m) plus bonuses.
Fagioli became the sixth signing for Fiorentina manager Raffaele Palladino during the January transfer window.
The midfielder joins new recruits Michael Folorunsho, Pablo Mari, Cher Ndour, Nicolas Valentini and Nicolo Zaniolo ahead of Thursday’s home league match with Inter Milan, where victory would lift them above Juventus.
