Three-horse chase on for Juventus’ top target Patrick Dorgu

Patrick Dorgu joining Juventus with Andrea Cambiaso departing could help solve the defensive dilemma for under-pressure head coach Thiago Motta, and earn the club some big bucks in the process.

Lecce’s prized asset of 20-year-old Dorgu, who can fit in at full-back, left-back or wing-back, appeared to be heading to Manchester United until there was sudden interest in Italy.

The Danish international is now on the radar of both the Bianconeri and Antonio Conte’s table-topping Napoli, which now makes it a three-horse race.

Cristiano Giuntoli, the Juventus sporting director, seems to be making in-roads to try and secure Dorgu’s signature before the transfer deadline on 3 February.

There’s speculation that full-back Andrea Cambiaso is on his way to Manchester City, with head coach Pep Guardiola urgently rebuilding his ageing squad following some shocking team displays this term.

If Motta does lose Cambiaso for around €60 million (US$63m), he will desperately need a swift replacement. With Chelsea defender Axel Disasi no longer an option, as he’s going on loan to Aston Villa, there’s been a rethink.

Dorgu is now a priority for the Turin team, and would be a real bargain with an asking price of just €30m (US$31.5m).

It’s understood that Lecce have opened negotiations with Manchester United following two failed bids, although Dorgu’s future could remain in Serie A.

Being snapped up by Juventus or Napoli is potentially a more attractive proposition for the youngster, who has bagged three Serie A goals this term.

Dorgu knows the Italian top tier well and he wouldn’t need to move overseas to prove himself, plus there’s the lure of playing in the Champions League next season that could prove the tipping point towards the Bianconeri or Napoli.

However, there’s mounting pressure on Motta so Dorgu could try to avoid becoming an outcast should Barcelona legend Xavi arrive in the summer. In contrast ex-Juventus boss Conte seems settled at Napoli and could help develop Dorgu’s game.
