When Thiago Motta failed to materialize for the post-match press conference following Juve's humiliating 3-0 Serie defeat at Fiorentina, sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli took over his duties.
Giuntoli was responsible for luring Motta from Bologna, despite Max Allegri still in charge of the Bianconeri. He was an avid supporter of Motta, but following a meeting with Elkann the onus was finding an urgent replacement.
As Motta's rein was less than impressive, Elkann demanded an interim head coach and so it boiled down to two-horse race between ex-Italy boss Roberto Mancini and former Lazio manager Igor Tudor.
Juventus announced on Sunday afternoon that Motta, who was away visiting family in Portugal, had been relieved of his duties. The club announced that Tudor has been installed with nine Serie A matches remaining.
Short-term solution
There has been no details about how long Tudor will be in charge, but it is believed that his contract will officially run until 30 June.
Tudor has been tasked to try and earn Champions League qualification, which means finishing the season in the top four. However, the top three places appear to be out of reach as Atalanta, Inter Milan and Napoli fight it out to win the Scudetto.
There are six sides battling it to clinch this coveted Champions League berth, with Tudor likely to be rewarded for finishing four with the option to extend his contract until June 2026.
Juventus will be tackling the highly lucrative 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, to be played in the US from 14 June with the final scheduled for 13 July.
If Tudor fails to secure a Champions League place, his contract will expire during the prestigious tournament.
The fact that Tudor was allegedly willing to accept the terms of initially being interim head coach until 30 June gave him the edge over Mancini.
Mancini, whose glittering playing and coaching career has been laden with trophies, is believed to have wanted a four-month deal with Juventus with an automatic trigger of remaining in charge of the Bianconeri if he earned Champions League soccer next season.
Juventus seem sceptical of committing to long-term plans after the failure of Project Motta, and with Tudor not making big demands he was favoured over Mancini.
